Inspire, Fall 2003

Inspire 7 Christina R. Schut (top), an adolescent and young adult integrated life science education major from Hudsonville, Michigan, received the Faculty Scholarship Award. This honor is given to graduates who maintain a perfect 4.0 grade point average throughout their college careers. Alistair Begg (bottom), senior pastor of Parkside Church in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, received a doctor of divinity degree from the University. This came in recognition of Alistair’s international ministry of teaching and evangelism. Alistair, who was born in Scotland, spent the first 30 years of his life in the United Kingdom. Following graduation from theological college in London, he served in two Scottish churches, first as an assistant pastor at Charlotte Chapel, Edinburgh, and then as pastor of Hamilton Baptist Church, Glasgow. Alistair has been at Parkside Church since September 1983. The daily speaker on the national radio program “Truth for Life,” he is the author of the Moody Press titles, Made for His Pleasure, Lasting Love: How to Avoid Marital Failure , What Angels Wish They Knew , and The Hand of God . Faculty and Staff Members of the Year Named Each year the student body selects one faculty member and one staff member to be awarded for their quality service and dedication to students. This year’s honorees were Jim Leightenheimer ’80 and Jerry “Butch” Gleason. Jim, who is an associate professor of communication arts, was named Faculty Member of the Year. Along with his teaching duties, Jim advises the student radio station, U99.5, and chairs the broadcasting advisory council and the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges committee. He also serves on the Educational Resources and Assistance Program committee (which provides Renmin University in China with student teachers from Cedarville). A faculty member since 1982, Jim received his M.A. from Ohio University and was the director of the “Adventures in Time” radio program for Dayton Public Radio and the Human Race Theatre Company. He is the director of audio services at his church, Grace Baptist of Cedarville. According to Student Academic Advisory Board President Joseph Reno ’03, who presented the award to Jim, students describe Jim as “trusted by everyone, respected, personable, doggedly loyal, and future- thinking.” Jim was joined on the platform by his wife, Beth (Summerlin) ’80, five children, and other family members to receive the award.
