IN MEMORYOM Blair Brasel'30 passed away in December 1994. His son,James,shares,"My father always spoke fondly of his days at Cedarville; the people who were responsible for his education.. gave him an outlook on life that stood him in good stead all the years of his life." Marie Wilt Provens'40 passed away August 15, 1994.A resident of Hilliard, Ohio,she was 76 years old. William "Montgomery"West'43 passed away at the age of74 on January 3, 1996. He was a World War II U.S.Army veteran and a retired public school administrator. He leaves behind his wife, Vona (Owens'41), living in Middletown,Ohio. Our heartfelt sympathies also go to his brother,Joseph West'36,ofNorth Lewisburg,Ohio and sister,Ruth West'34,of Lebanon,Ohio. Betty Nelson Loos'48 passed away January 30, 1996. She was a teacher for 32 years and lived in Xenia, Ohio at the time of her death. Our condolences are shared with her sister, Hazel Nelson Gaiser'38N, son-in-law Bruce Spencer'77N,and other family members. Jerry Thornton'58 went home to be with his Lord December 3, 1995 after an 18-month battle with cancer. He leaves his wife,Linda,at their home in Grandville, Michigan. Our sympathies also extend to his children and their families: Craig and Jayne Thornton Bartrand '83 ofAtlanta, Georgia and Jeff Thornton'85N,his wife, Patricia, and two precious grandchildren in Grand Rapids, Michigan. De Elda Payton'60 was ushered into glory November 10, 1995,at age 60.De was working in the yard and suffered a massive heart attack. De and his wife, Nancy(Cope'57)served as missionaries in the Philippines for 24 years. In 1987,they transferred to church planting in the United States with Association of Baptists for World Evangelism(ABWE).At the time of his death,De was pastor of First Baptist Church in Twinsburg,Ohio. Our condolences extend to his children and their families: Phil'82 and Kim Payton Southwell'82,Tim and Becki Payton Konuch '84,and Thurm '87 and Lisa Henry Payton '87. Cindy Carr'76joined her Saviour on January 15, 1996 after battling cancer. Cindy lived in Carpentersville, Illinois. A Cedarville College student who attends Cindy's home church commented,"I'm so happy for her, because she's in heaven—she was ready and always had a positive attitude about everything." Our sympathies are shared with her sister, Connie Carr'83,and family. Pat Farrow Porter'86 was ushered into heaven January 22, 1996 after battling breast cancer. Our heartfelt sympathies extend to her husband,Charles, and their children, Charmain(8), Sarah (7), and Charles(3), living in Atlanta, Georgia. Focus ON THE FIELD Larry Smith'60 and his wife,Bev,serve as missionaries with Association of Baptists for World Evangelism(ABWE)in Ontario,Canada.In January 1996,the Smiths spent two weeks in Cuba to deliver a $10,000 offering for church sites and to gather information regarding churches. Ken Van Loon'75 has accepted a position as campus pastor and dean of students at Kent View Christian High School in Kent,Washington. After much prayer and counsel,the Van Loons resigned from Baptist Mid-Missions(BMM)in December 1995 to begin this new ministry. Ken and his wife,Sandy, were church- planters with BMM for twenty years. Sallie Pickard Fogle'77N and her husband, Larry, havejoined the staff of Bibles International(B.I),a division of Baptist Mid-Missions. After ministering.for many years in Zambia,Africa,the Fogies will live in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where the headquarters for B.I. is located. Larry serves as a Scripture use coordinator, working with missionaries and national church leaders to assure maximum distribution and usage of new Bible translations. Until June 1996,the Fogles and their three children are residing in Cedarville, Ohio. Kent Craig'80 and his wife, Kelly, serve in the Philippines with ABWE.In November 1995,the Craigs returned to the United States for a one-year furlough. During their furlough,the Craigs and their two children, Kari(6)and Kandace(2), are living in Brownsburg,Indiana. David '81 and Carol Cox Merkh'82 are enjoying a one-year furlough from their ministry at Word of Life Seminary in Sao Paulo, Brazil.The Merkhs and their children, David (11),Shelly(10), Daniel(7),Stephen (4),and Keila(1), are living in Medford,New Jersey, while they renew contacts with family,friends, and supporting churches. David has published an English version of his book,101 Creative Ideasfor Family Devotions. Originally published in Portuguese in 1994, the book has sold thousands of copies in Brazil.The Merkh family is praying that the Lord will use this book to encourage families in the training and discipling of their children. Kirk'84 and Joyce Pycraft Wesselink'85 are missionaries with Baptist Church Planters in Rio Rancho,New Mexico.In addition to his regular pastoral duties, Kirk is serving as commander and game director for their Awana program. Joyce serves as the Awana secretary, teaches Sunday school,and works as a nurse at a local hospital. The Wesselinks enjoy three children, Julie(0,Brenda(4),and Scott(1). Joy Hart'85 is a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology.In September 1996,she will begin a one-year missions term with Baptist Mid-Missions in Central African Republic. Jill Slayton Puett'88 and her husband,Stephen, have begun their first term as missionaries with UFM International. The Puetts left for Guyana,South America in November 1995. Terri Lynn Van Beveren'88 leads the learning disabilities program atChristiansen Academy in Venezuela. In order to secure a new visa, Terri Lynn returned to the United States for Christmas 1995 and celebrated a family reunion at her mother's home in Tennessee. The father ofTerri Lynn and Toni Lynn Van Beveren Fleming'88 passed away in April 1995. Brian'92 and Dana Guy Phipps'90 rejoice that God has provided them with a tent-making ministry in Ankara,Turkey. Brian will represent a Washington,DC- based news agency as a free-lance radio journalist, also known as a "stringer." The Phipps continue to study the Turkish language diligently in order to share their faith.
