HON-3170 Music and Emotion 2 hours An exploration of the emotional component of musical performance, listening, and worship. Prerequisite: HON-1010 The Classical and Medieval Ages; HON-1020 Renaissance, Reformation, and Revolutions. (three-year rotation) HON-3210 Contemporary Global Issues –Sp 2 hours Designed to provoke critical thinking about a broad range of complicated, cross-disciplinary issues that confront the world today. Students will be introduced to issues that are truly global– planetary problems, global economy, environmental issues, human rights, and basic human needs. HON-3230 Chance, Emergence, or Design –Sp 2 hours The origin of complexity and order in the universe is studied from three different perspectives: Neo-Darwinism (chance and necessity), Emergence, and Creation. Starting at the origin of the physical universe and ending with the origin of self-awareness, these perspectives are compared by their scientific value and their philosophical and religious implications. (odd years) HON-3240 2 hours Science and Religion: Middle Ages to Darwin –Sp A seminar centering on major primary sources in the history of science, exploring the historical relationship of science and religion, particularly Christian theology, from the late Middle Ages to the Darwinian Revolution. Prerequisite: HON-1010 The Classical and Medieval Ages; HON-1020 Renaissance, Reformation, and Revolutions. HON-3250 The Sixties: A Decade of Change 2 hours This course will focus on one of the key decades of American history and American life: The 1960s. Key social, cultural, and political themes will be analyzed. Among the issues to be considered will be: the civil rights movement, the cultural revolution (from The Beatles to Woodstock), feminism, the new left, the Vietnam War, the assassinations, the legacy of the 60s. These movements will be evaluated from the perspective of a biblical world view. Since we know there is no such thing as a neutral fact, the interpretations of various authors and the instructor will be evaluated. Prerequisites: HON-1010 The Classical and Medieval Ages; HON-1020 Renaissance, Reformation, and Revolutions. HON-3300 The Biblical Canon 2 hours An introductory study of the biblical canon from a historical, hermeneutical, and theological perspective. Students will consider how the Bible came to be and also how it functions as an authoritative collection of Scripture. Possible issues include the canon formation process, the relationship between the Old Testament and the New Testament, the hermeneutical impact of a canonical collection, the reception of the canon among the believing community, the criteria for canonicity, the relationship between canon and inspiration, and the significance of relevant non-canonical literature. The course will also have a specific focus on the composition, canonization, and consolidation of a selected corpus of biblical writings. HON-3310 The Philosophy of Love and Sex 2 hours An introductory reflection on the conceptual and normative issues in the philosophy of love and sex. Students will read standard historical treatments of these issues from Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, and Kant, among others, as well as contemporary philosophical perspectives. Issues include the nature of love and its kinds, the relation of lover and beloved, forgiveness, gender, sexual perversion, abortion, and marriage. HON-4110 History of Public Address 3 hours Classical rhetorical systems and theories are studied from the perspective of the rhetorical critic. The development of rhetoric is traced from the Greek period to the present. Analysis is made of the part rhetoric has played in the development of philosophies and nations. HON-4155 Image and Word in a Visual Culture –Sp 3 hours Inquiry into the tension between image and word in Jewish and Christian thought and the implications for Christians living in a visual culture. Traces this tension through the art of Judaism and the Medieval church, the iconoclastic controversies of early Byzantium and the English Civil Wars, and recent and contemporary religious thinkers. HON-4920 Honors Senior Colloquium II 1 hour Development of a disciplinary understanding of the integration of faith, learning, and life. HON-4950 Honors Senior Project 1–2 hours The writing of an interdisciplinary research project. Liberal Arts (LART) LART-1000 Introduction to Liberal Arts –Fa 1 hour An introduction to the liberal arts and the Liberal Arts program. LART-4940 Senior Research Methodology –Fa, Sp 1 hour This course prepares students for the senior capstone project and guides them through the completion of their capstone proposal. Prerequisites: LART-1000 Introduction to Liberal Arts; permission of instructor. LART-4950 Senior Project –Fa, Sp 2 hours Students select a topic of interest and then research and write a paper under the direction of a research mentor. Students present findings before faculty and peers. Prerequisites: LART-4940 Senior Research Methodology; acceptance in the B.A. of Liberal Arts degree program and senior status. Department of Kinesiology and Allied Heath Course Descriptions Allied Health (ALHL) ALHL-1000 1 hour Introduction to the Allied Health Professions –Fa Introductory course for students planning career involvement in health and health-related professions. The students will be introduced to health careers by providing descriptions of jobs, the educational and legal requirements, the work environment, and additional information about specific fields. ALHL-2000 Medical Terminology –Fa, Sp 3 hours An online self-paced program designed to familiarize students with vocabulary indigenous to the medical profession; including terms of anatomic/physiologic features, medical diagnosis, procedures and therapies. Prerequisite: GBIO-2010 Human Anatomy and Physiology I. ALHL-3940 Professional Development –Fa 1 hour This course is designed to assist students in acquiring an in-depth understanding of requirements for entry-level graduate programs in their chosen discipline, and the credentialing process for their chosen profession.
