Academic Information Course Sequence Students should take care to complete proficiency requirements, global awareness courses, and general education courses before they have completed 60 credits total. It is also important to check prerequisites of courses before registration to ensure a course is able to be taken. Schedule/Formats Online courses are generally taught in eight-week terms — two sessions in the fall, two sessions in the spring, and one session in the summer. Students can start their program during any session. There are some basic, foundational courses that will be 16-weeks in length. Online courses at Cedarville are individually designed to provide you with the best learning experience. As an online student, you will use a web-based learning management system called Canvas, which is also used by some on-campus courses. Online courses are asynchronous (no set meeting time). Your online course learning activities may include online videos, assigned readings, quizzes, exams, essays, group assignments or discussion board posts. Advising and Registration Each online student is assigned an academic advisor to assist with course planning and academic progress. Students register for courses using the Student Planning tool, accessible through the myCU portal. Instructions will be available at the beginning of each registration period. Prior to registration, students should update their academic plan and complete the Financial Responsibility Agreement for that semester. The online academic advisor will schedule a time to meet with the student to confirm correct progress in their program. Students will not be allowed to register for courses if there is an outstanding balance on their account. Course Load Online students are considered full-time if they are enrolled in 12 credits for the semester. Those credits can be equally divided into 6 credits per session, or 3 credits in one session and 9 in another session. If a student is not working, it is not recommended to take more than 9 credits per session. If a student is working, it is not recommended to take more than 3-6 credits per session. An online student is considered present in a course when they complete any academic activity for that course. Course Attendance Attendance, for online courses, is determined by submission of an academic assignment such as an examination, written paper or project, discussion board post, or another similar academic event. Changing Program Modality Change From an On-campus Program to an Online Program Residential students wishing to transition to the online modality must submit a Change of Modality form, available at cedarville. edu/online. Such changes may impact tuition rates, financial aid eligibility, and course availability. It is strongly encouraged for any student interested in changing to an online program to talk first to the academic advisor, as switching may delay graduation due to class offering schedules. Consulting the Financial Aid Office should also be done to confirm what financial aid might change. Note: Students may only change modalities for an upcoming semester, not a current term. Students may only change status once in an academic year, and only twice during their undergraduate academic career. Transferring into Cedarville Cedarville welcomes students wishing to transfer into an online program from another institution. Potential transfer students should contact the admissions department first to go through the admissions process. After acceptance, the university’s transfer coordinator will work with the student to verify coursework that will be accepted at Cedarville. More details can be found in the admissions section earlier in the catalog. Transferring a Course into Cedarville as a Current Student Coursework to be completed at other institutions by a student enrolled at Cedarville University must be approved before the course is taken by securing the signatures of the transfer coordinator, the student’s academic advisor, and the chair of the academic department governing the course requirement that the transferred course is to satisfy. Transient Study Applications are available online and in the Office of the Registrar. An official transcript must be received before transfer credit will be evaluated and recorded. Non-Traditional Courses Auditing Students in online programs are not permitted to audit online courses. Independent Studies Online students wishing to take an independent study must first get permission from the academic advisor as well as the Vice President for Strategic Initiatives. Only 6 credits of independent study may count toward graduation requirements. Out-of-Class Courses Online students are not permitted to take out-of-class courses. Unless otherwise authorized, students in online programs may only enroll in courses being offered on the regular schedule. 2025–26 Undergraduate Academic Catalog Page 207 Cedarville Online Academic Information
