vital part of the Cedarville College culture is ministry. Students learn that biblical Christianity demonstrates a servant's heart in all areas of life. Directed by Dr. Harold Green, the Christian Ministries Department coordinates community and missionary outreach activities. tlUNDQED8 Of 8TUDENT8 VOLUNTEEQ over 70,000 hours each year. Students may be involved in campus interaction teams to nearby colleges and universities, offering Bible studies, discussion groups, and one-on-one interaction to share Jesus Christ. Or they may be part of the 70 teams who serve each week with churches, adult literacy, crisis pregnancy centers, gospel missions, hospitals, jail and detention centers, the developmentally disabled, nursing homes, children's homes, and many other agencies. MI88IONAQY INTEQN8tlIP 8EQVICE (MI8) provides opportunities for worldwide outreach. Since the inception of the MIS program in 1970 to the end of 1993, 1,766 participants have served in 56 countries. Gary Fowler, former missionary and a Cedarville graduate, directs the MIS activities. Week-long missions conferences in the fall and spring challenge students to consider missions as a career ministry. Students, faculty, and staff raise their own financial and prayer support and participate in many diverse ministries. MIS individuals and teams assist missionaries and churches in many capacities and offer particular services such as singing, drama, puppets, medical assistance, technical assistance, athletics, and physical labor. Summer 1993 saw 160 members of the college family serve in 20 countries. New ministries included a women's volleyball team to the Dominican Republic and a sign language team to aJamaican camp for deaf children. New fields included Russia, Zambia, and IrianJaya. Students and faculty often suggest and develop new community and MIS ministries. Several years ago, two students originated Open Heirs, a street evangelism ministry in Cincinnati. Currently 150 students are involved in Open Heirs each Friday evening during the school year. After Professor Walter Hoffmann returned from a teaching opportunity in Russia, he organized an MIS team which he and his wife led to Russia in the summer of 1993.
