1996-1997 Cedarville College Annual Report

Student Recognition + Deborah Frank's entry, "Consequences and Recurrences in the Restricted Partition Function d(n)," won second place in the Third Annual Mathematical Association of America Student Paper Contest. Senior Philip Wittmer, a professional writing major from Hartville, Ohio was one of 14 students in the nation to be named to the Society for Technical Communication's national honor society. The engineering team exhibit placed first among student entries at the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Congress in Detroit. Cedarville's forensics team placed second in state competition. Forensics teams have recorded three seconds and five firsts in the last eight years. Freshman James Stitzel of Huttonsville, West Virginia was named a Horatio Alger scholarship winner. Junior Cynthia McFadden of Logan, Utah, was se lected to participate in the prestigious Washington Internship for Students of Engineering. She is the fifth recipient from Cedarville in as many years. () Donnie Woodyard, a junior biology/premedicine maj or from Pearisburg, West Virginia, was named National Collegiate EMS (Emergency Medical Service) Provider of the Year at the National Collegiate EMS Foundation Conference. edarville is blessed with a caring, teaching faculty who combine academic credentials and professional experience with a commitment to Christ. They model character and demonstrate genuine concern for the students' academic and spiritual development in their roles as teacher, counselor, mentor, and friend. These roles extend outside the classroom, often beyond graduation and into the years following. Alumni consistently share that faculty prepared them well academically for career or graduate school and provided opportunities for exposure to professional experiences. T he Department of Science and Mathematics acquired a $20,000 I scanning electron microscope (SEM). SEM increases research and learning opportunities for students and faculty in the science, engineering, and nursing disciplines. Dr. Joseph Francis, assistant professor of biology, and Joseph Cantor, senior chemistry/biology major, work on a project. Faculty Accomplishments > Charles Allport, assistant to the academic vice president and associate professor of mechanical engineering, was honored by the Affiliate Societies Council of the Engineering and Science Foundation of Dayton . The award cited that Allport "conceived, developed, obtained accred itation for, and brought to a leve l of national prominence a completely new engineering school at Cedarville Co llege." > Professor Charles Hartman , assistant professor of accounting, graduated first in h is class of 150 students at the University of Dayton law school. Professor Keith Francis, assistant professor of electrical engineering, completed his Ph .D. at the University of Dayton. ) Professor Thomas Hutchison, assistant professor of Christian Education, completed his Ph .D. at Marquette University. > Professor David Warren received the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary. Professor Sandra Harner was one of three recipients of the 1997 Jay R. Gould Award presented by the Society for Technical Communication. The Award recognizes excellence in teaching, academic mentorship, a record of successful students, and innovative teaching. > Dr. Richard Chewning, the Chavanne Professor of Christian Ethics at Baylor University, was a visiting professor Fall Quarter 1997. He has authored more than 70 books and articles demonstrating the relationship between biblically guided faith and learning.
