1997-1998 Cedarville College Annual Report

C edarville engineering students attained an unprecedented number of achievements during the 1997-1998 academic year. + Cedarville won the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) annual student paper competition for Region V (OH, MI, Western PA, WV, Ontario) . + Students won a similar paper competition hosted by the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in Region II (OH, WV, PA, NJ, DE) . + Two students entered their senior design project in the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) Senior Design Project Showcase and came home with first place. + Cedarville was the only school to qualify two vehicles for the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Supermileage competition. Their car Eklektos took fifth place with 481 mpg, while the Exstasis finished eleventh. + Cedarville was the only engineering school in Ohio to have a 100 percent passing rate for the national Fundamentals of Engineering Exam. Debbie Pittman won first place in the Old Guard Oral Competition at the 1998 ASME Region V Regional Student Conference. Her presentation summarized work she had done for the SAE Micro Baja Truck Competition held in the fall. Debbie received $300 and presented her paper at the International Congress in Anaheim, California. + Cedarville was one of 14 teams given a 1997 Chevrolet Malibu to convert for ethanol operation in the Department of Energy's Alternative Fuel Engineering Student Design Challenge. Besides winning the Sportsmanship Award, the Cedarville team was first in design, first in driveability, and third in both the written and oral design reports. In preparation for the 1999 ethanol test competition, General Motors has supplied Cedarville and 13 other schools with the new 1999 Chevrolet 4x4 extended cab pickup as a test vehicle. College Sets Records in Several Categories T he College continues to enjoy record numbers in a variety of categories. One of the rrlost significant was the record number of students who graduated this past year. A total of 550 students completed their degree requirements during 1998. O ther records were set in applications received, freshmen admitted, and total enrollment . More than 2,100 h igh school graduates applied for admission to the College for the Fall 1998 quarter. The College matriculated 706 new freshmen in the fall, and enrollment reached an all-time high of 2,664 during the quarter. 5
