Mind for truth Excellence in Competition In another year of impressive academic achievements, students reaped the benefits of their world-class education. The forensics and debate teams partnered to earn a national team championship over 19 Christian colleges and universities. The forensics team won two individual championships (national varsity champion and national novice champion) and garnered top honors in Ohio, outdistancing squads from Ohio University and The Ohio State University. For the second year in a row, a Cedarville team won first place at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Model Design Competition. The team’s battery-powered miniature vehicle defeated cars from eight other schools, including Purdue University. In addition, another design team built a radio-controlled airplane which competed at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aerodesign Competition. The plane placed ninth out of 43 teams in this weight-bearing contest. Senior broadcasting major Brittany Waggoner saw her book, Prayers for When You’re Mad, Sad, or Just Totally Confused, published. The book is now in its second printing. Faculty Pursuits Students weren’t the only ones busy cultivating a mind for truth. Greg Belliveau, assistant professor of English, was nominated for a Christy Award for his novel, Go Down to Silence . Sandi Harner, professor of English, co-authored a highly-acclaimed textbook called Technical Marketing Communication . And, Dr. John Silvius, professor of biology, authored a fourth edition of his textbook, Biology: Principles and Perspectives , which presents biology from a Christian theistic worldview. Dr. Sharon Johnson, professor of management, received the Christian Business Faculty Association’s Chewning Award for his work as editor of the Journal of Biblical Integration in Business . The Chewning Award recognizes a passion and commitment toward integration of personal faith and business. Senior Bible major Charlie Shifflett was one of 20 students selected nationally to spend a summer at WORLD Journalism Institute, an intensive training school for Christian journalists. The Pensacola, Fla., native had the opportunity to interview Lisa Beamer, widow of Flight 93 hero Todd Beamer, among others.
