Page 43 2014–15 Graduate and Adult Programs Academic Catalog Department of Science and Mathematics Purpose Statement Graduate Certificate in Bioethics Purpose Statement The graduate certificate in Bioethics provides supplemental training in bioethics to college graduates just starting out or already engaged in professional work or postgraduate training. Health care professionals (e.g., physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists) are confronted daily with challenges to ethical and compassionate practice. Pastors, hospital chaplains, and social workers often serve on the ethics committees of community hospitals, and are frequently approached for advice on medical and bioethical questions. In all of these cases, additional training in bioethics will provide the tools for effective ethical reasoning and analysis of real-life problems. Program Objectives • Evaluate and clarify bioethical issues as Christians in a secular world. • Make informed and balanced ethical decisions. • Apply bioethical insights within a professional settings. The American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) has proposed core competencies for hospitals and individuals that engage in ethics consultations. The courses in the bioethics program match these core competencies. Accreditation will be pursued when standards have been established. Admission Criteria Cedarville University invites applications to the Bioethics Graduate Certificate program from graduates who have received a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited or otherwise approved university, who are able to present strong academic records, and who have a profession of faith in Jesus Christ. Each applicant will be reviewed on an individual basis. In addition to the general admission requirements listed in the Graduate Admissions section of this catalog, students must meet the following requirements: • Earned a minimum of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited program with a preferred grade point average of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale • Computer proficiency and ability to take courses in an online environment. Tuition Cost Tuition cost for courses taken for the Bioethics Graduate Certificate for the 2014–15 academic year is $536 per semester credit. Financial Aid As a nondegree program, students enrolled in Cedarville’s Graduate Certificate in Bioethics are not eligible for federal or state aid. However, students may qualify for personal loans to pay for this program. Some scholarships are available through Cedarville University’s Center for Bioethics. For more information, contact Graduate Financial Aid. Program Delivery Cedarville University has designed the Bioethics Graduate Certificate to be flexible and responsive to student needs. Courses are generally offered fully online in eight-week sessions. Some course sections may include limited face-to-face sessions when offered in combination with an academic conference.
