The knowledge presented in this course will prepare students for appropriate administration/prescription of medications. The third course in the pharmacology sequence synthesizes the general principles of pharmacology taught in Pharmacology I and II. Where possible, Ears-Eyes-Nose-Throat (EENT), gastrointestinal, genitourinary, renal, hematologic, and infectious disease drug classes will be taught in parallel with topics covered in Clinical Medicine II. MPAS-6305 3 hours PA Profession and Healthcare Systems PAs serve as healthcare professionals within the US healthcare system. We need to know some basics about the healthcare systems in which we serve to understand the bigger picture and help our patients navigate through the system. We will explore key features of healthcare delivery, policy, and public health in the US. You will also learn basic concepts of patient safety, prevention of medical errors, risk management, and quality improvement within healthcare. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the PA program. MPAS-6400 Clinical Year Foundations 5 hours You have completed the didactic year of the PA program, and it is time to prepare for clinical rotations. This course will cover clinical year policies, processes, and expectations as well as reinforce your foundation of medical knowledge, interpersonal skills, clinical skills, and clinical reasoning. With the goal of equipping you for a successful clinical year, this valuable course content focuses on patient care in the emergency and surgical settings, effective patient communication strategies in challenging situations, and skilled documentation and oral presentations. You will practice and further develop your clinical skills through participation in workshops, labs, advanced cardiac life support training, and standardized patient encounters. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the PA program. Successful completion of preceding courses in PA program. MPAS-6410 Master's Seminar I 4 hours First in a three-course series that prepares students for the transition to practicing PA by covering a wide range of current and trending clinical practice and public health topics, with an emphasis on providing evidence-based care. You will develop skills important to professional practice through participation in seminars, workshops, small group activities, and oral presentations. Throughout the series, you will build a Professional Portfolio that demonstrates your education, training, and scholarly activity. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the PA program. Successful completion of preceding courses in PA program. MPAS-6411 Master's Seminar II 2 hours Second in a three-course series to prepare the student for transition to practicing PA by covering a wide range of current and trending clinical practice and public health topics, with an emphasis on providing evidence-based care. You will develop skills important to professional practice through participation in seminars, workshops, small group activities, and oral presentations. Throughout the series, you will build a Professional Portfolio that demonstrates your education, training, and scholarly activity. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the PA program. Successful completion of preceding courses in PA program. MPAS-6412 Master's Seminar III 4 hours Third in a three-course series that prepares students for the transition to practicing PA by covering a wide range of current and trending clinical practice and public health topics, with an emphasis on providing evidence-based care. You will develop skills important to professional practice through participation in seminars, workshops, small group activities, and oral presentations. As part of this course, you are required to pass a summative evaluation designed to assess overall performance and preparation for graduation and clinical practice. At the conclusion of the course, you will have completed all required components of your Professional Portfolio. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the PA program. MPAS-6420 Clinical Rotation in Family Medicine 4 hours After 12 months of intensive study and didactic coursework, you are ready to apply clinical skills, interpersonal communication, medical knowledge, clinical reasoning and problem-solving, and professional behaviors to real-life patient assessment, diagnosis, and management through supervised clinical practice experiences (SCPEs) in the 4-week Clinical Rotation in Family Medicine. Family Medicine provides care to patients across the lifespan and emphasizes disease prevention and patient empowerment through education and counseling. Family Medicine clinicians also diagnose and manage acute and chronic diseases and conditions in the outpatient setting. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the PA program. Successful completion of preceding courses in PA program. MPAS-6421 Clinical Rotation in Internal Medicine 4 hours After 12 months of intensive study and didactic coursework, you are ready to apply clinical skills, interpersonal communication, medical knowledge, clinical reasoning, and problem-solving to real-life patient assessment, diagnosis, and management through supervised clinical practice experiences (SCPEs) in the 4-week Clinical Rotation in Internal Medicine. The emphasis of Internal Medicine is to provide comprehensive and ongoing medical care to adult and elderly patients with acute and chronic diseases and conditions. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the PA program. Successful completion of preceding courses in PA program. MPAS-6422 Clinical Rotation in Women's Health 4 hours After 12 months of intensive study and didactic coursework, you are ready to apply and practice clinical skills, interpersonal communication, medical knowledge, clinical reasoning, and problem-solving to real-life patient assessment, diagnosis, and management through supervised clinical practice experiences (SCPEs) in the 4-week Clinical Rotation in Women's Health. The emphasis of this rotation will be both the management of gynecologic diseases and conditions and the provision of prenatal care. You will also apply and practice incorporating preventative care to include health promotion, disease prevention, patient education, and counseling specific to the needs of women patients.
