C E D A R V I L L E COL L EGE . 37 LITERARY SOCIETIES. Th e Ph ilad e lph ian Society was o rganized in the fall o f 1894 , a n d the Philosophic d u rin g the fall of 1 S 95 . Both societies have been m a k in g successful progress. T h ey occupy the two large halls in the th ird story o f the n ew college building. T h e ir annual con test takes place at the close of the sp ring term. This is one of the characteristic e n te rta inm en ts o f the College. It alway s gives vigor and inspiration to the literary students. One half of a true education consists in literary training. These so­ cieties are under the control o f the studen ts. T h u s hav ing the man ag em en t in th e ir ow n hands, they will tend to develop o rig ina lity and independenc e o f th ough t and action. ATHLETICS. A th le tic exercises are encou raged by the Facu lty and the Board of Trustees. T h e y are under the personal supervision of the P re sid en t of the College, and are especially advanced by the symp a thy and help of Tru stees Steele and Stevenson. A fine, level field ne a r the College has been secured a nd laid out for base ball and foot ball. On the College C ampu s there is a first- class tennis-court. Last year an A th letic C lub was formed by the studen ts to direct and stimulate field sports and to p repare for a Field -day d u ring Commenc emen t week of the coming year. It has succeeded in o rgan izing a base ball nine which developed strong ly d u ring the ye a r and played with clubs from o the r Colleges, T h e foot ball team wh ich was started two years will be again in vigorous operation in the Fall.
