DEPARTMENT OF ORATORY. PROl'£SSOR PALMF.R. Every voice can be developed and cultured. The more intelligent !he student, the more rapid his progress. A good speaker must have the power of intellect, of emotion, and of ·will. The purpose of this department and the object of the teacher arc the development and cultivation of all the powers of expression. A limited number of credits in oratory may be counted in the Collegiate Department toward the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Sec Article 54 in Departments of Study. T. The careful and complete development and culti,•ation of all the muscles and orga11s used in voice productio", viz.: Breathing-For vigor and energy of speech. Vocal Calisthenics-For case, firmness, and fluency of utterance. Vocal Drill-For follness, depth, and purity of tone. Articulation-For distinctness and accuracy of utterance. Pitch and Force of Vocality-For modulation, melody, and power. Subvocality and Aspiration-For strength and emphasis. Time, Respiration. and Pause-For naturalness, ease, and action. Concentration of Tone-For intensity and energy. IL Physical development. The entire body must be developed and brought under the com• 1>lete control of the mind. Gesture-Gymnastic movements, Delsarte System of Gesture, studies in facial expression, bodily expression, and study of character. III. Mental and Emotional and Control. Analysis of emotions and passions. l\,fental concentration and energy. Study of prose, poetry, and Shakespearean selections, etc. IV. Training for Artistic and Dramatic Recitals. RATES OF TUITION IN ORATORY. T uition, 75 cents a lesson for twelve lessons. Single lessons, 90 cents each. Class work, $2.50 for twelve lessons. Contingent fee to students not in other departments, one dollar per semester.
