A good speaker must have the power o f intellect, of emotion, and of will. The purpose of 1his department and the object of the teacher are the development and culti\"ation of all 1he powers o f expression. I. The careful and complete development and cnhivation of all 1he muscles and orga11s used in voice prod11ctio11, viz.: Breathing-For vigor and energy of speech. Vocal Calisthenics-For ease, firmness, and fluency of utterance. Vocal Drill-For fullness, depth, and purity of tone. • Ar1icula1ion-For distincmess and accuracy of utterance. Pi1ch and Force o f Vocali1y-For modulation, melody, and power. Subvocality and Aspiration-For strength and emphasis. Time, Respiration, and Pause-For naturalness, ease, and action. Concentration of T one-For intensity and energy. IT. Physical development. The entire body must be de, 1 eloped and brought under the com– plete control of the mind. Gesture-Gymnastic movements, Delsarte System of Gesture, studies in facial expression, bodily expression, and study of character. II I. Mental and Emotional and Control. Analysis of emotions and passions. 1fental concentration and energy. Study of prose, poetry, and Shakespearean selections, etc. lV. Training for Artistic and Dramatic Recitals. ELECTIVE ORATORY. Electi,·c work in oratory to the amount of eighteen credits will be coumed toward the "Bachelor of Arts degree. One lesson a week for one semester constitutes the work required for one credit. Stu– dents el<:cting oratory must pay the usual fees for lessons in oratory in addition 10 1heir collegiate tuition fees. -6<>-
