ENGLISH POETRY-This course includes a study of verse strncture and an analysis of selected poems; also a critical study of the early nineteenth century poets, Coleridge, Scott, Byron, Shelley, Keats. Elective for all who have not taken the course as a part of the required work in English. Three hours a week, one sem– ester. 45. SHAKESPEARE-A careful study and analysis is made of some of Shakespeare's tragedies and comedies. Others are read rapidly. Written critiques are required. TnE ESSAvL-Sclected essays of Ruskin, Emerson, and oth– ers arc made the basis of the course. Collateral reading is required of each student and oral reports are given in class. THE NOVEL>--Thc development of the novel from its earli– est form to that of the modern short story is traced. Each student is required to do a certain amount of collateral reading and prepare written reviews and criticisms. SHORT STORY WRITINC-A careful Sludy is made of the structure of the short story and much attention given to the details 42
