COURSES IN MUSIC. ORATORY ANO PBrLOsornv MUSIC. 134. ELECTIVE MUSJC-Eleetive work in music to the amount of eight credits will be counted towards the degree of Bachelor of Arts. One lesson a week for one semester constitutes the work required for one credit. Students electing music must pay the usual fees for le11son11 in music in addition to their regular collegiate tuition feee. See the Department of Music for the nature of the work offere<l. ORATORY. 135. PRINCIPLJ.;S OF PUBLIC SPEAKING-This course includes: the fundamentals of effective speaking, study and praetiee of the prinei• plea of breathing, voice-production, enunciation, and action; delivery of extracts from the works of writen and speakers. The text-book is Phillips'. Eleeti,•e for alJ who have not taken the course as a part of the required work in oratory. Three hours a week, first semester. 130. ORATORY-In this course the distinctive characteristics of oratorical atyle are studied; the masterpieces of representative orators are analyzed an1l the principles thus discovered are applied in the writing and delivery of original orations. The text-book is Phillips'. Elective for all who have not taken the course as a part of the required work in oratory. Three hours a week, second semester. 137. ELECTIVE ORATORY-Elective work in pri\"ate lessons in oratory to the amount of eight credits will be counted towards the degree of Bachelor of Arts. One lesson a week for one semester con– stitutes the work required for one credit. Students taking private lessons mu11t pay the usual fees for lessons in oratory in addition to their regular collegiate tuition fee11. See the Department of Oratory for the nature of the work offered. PHILOSOPHY. 138. INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY-The purpose of this course is to explain the nature of philosophical thought, to give a general view of the main problems of philosophy and of the more important types of philosophical doctrine, to ,;bow the value of the 11tudy of philosophy and to give some practical suggestion& as to the spirit and method of its study.
