ENGLISH AND FRENCH 26. THEME COURSE-Attention is devoted to composition of all types. The aim is to obtain correct form, simplicity, and clearnesli in writing. One hour a week, one semester. 27. ENGLISH POETRY-This course includes a study of verse structure and an analysis of selected poems; also a critical study of the early nineteenth century poets-\Vordsworth, Scott, Byron, Shelley, Keats. Elective. Three hours a week, one semester. 28. SHAKE'SPEARE-A careful study and analysis is made of some of Shakespeare's tragedies and comedies. Others are read rap– idly. Written critiques are required. Elective. Three hours a week, one semester. 29. THE NOVEL-The development of the novel from its earliest form to that of the modern short story is traced. Each student is required to do a certain amount of collateral reading and prepare written reviews and criticisms. The text-.book is Cross'. Elective. Three hours a week, one semester. 30. THE SHORT STORY-A careful study of the history and technique of the short story, with Albright's "The Short Story" as text-book. A critical analysis of a representative collection of short stories, Ashmun's Modern Short Stories, is supplemented by plots and stories required from the students. Elective. Three hours a week, one semester. 31. AMERICAN POETRY-A survey is taken of the most char– acteristic works of Bryant, Poe, Emerson, Longfellow, Whittier, Holmes, Lowell, Whitman, Lanier, and Riley. Elective. Three houi:-s a week, one semester. 32. BROWNING AND TENNYSON-This course includes a crit– ical study of a few selections from each poet and the rapid reading of others. Elective. LITERARY COl\IPOSITION-This course involves the writ– ing of interpretative and critiC:al themes based on readings selected from the prose and poetry of English and American literature. Elec– tive. EARLY ENGLISH LITERATURE-This course embraces a history of English literature from the Celtic period to the Elizabethan age, with the critical analysis o( prose, poetic, and dramatic works o( each period. MODERN ENGLISH LITERATURE-Thia course includes a history of English literature, from the Elizabethan period through the Victorian age, with the critical analysis of prose, poetic, and drama– tic works of each period. Elective. Three hours a week, one semes– te,. FRENCH PROFESSOR CRESWELL 36. BE'GINNING-Grammar, composition, and drill in syntax, with colloquial practice and some easy reading, constitute the work. The text-.books are Fraser and Squair's French Grammar and Le Francais et Sa Patrie. Elective. Four hours a week throughout the year. 37. READING AND CONVERSATION-Reading and colloquial practice, with review of grammar, constitute the work of the course.
