EDUC TION AND ENGLISH 20. SCHOOL ORGANIZATION AND LAW-The organization, ad– ministration, and supervision of schools, and the school laws of Ohio. Both ideal and actual conditions are discussed. Text: Chancellor. Elective. History of Education should precede this course. Three hours a week, one semester. 21. SCHOOL DISCIPLINE-The ideals, principles, methods and devices of s chool discipline. Texts: Morehouse and Bagley. Elective. Three hours a week, one semester. ENGLISH PROFESSOR SCHNEDER 22. RHETORIC-Expression of simple, fluent, and forcible English is taught. Text: Claxton and McGinnis. Required. Three hours a week throughout the year. 23. THEME COURSE-·Attention is devoted to composition of all types. The aim is to obtain correct form, simplicity, and clearness in WTiting. One hour a week, one semester. 24. ENGLISH POETRY-A study of verse structure and an analysis of selected poems; also a critical study of the early nineteenth century poets-Wordsworth, Scott, Byron, Shelley, Keats. Elective. Three hours a week, one semester. 25. SHAKESPEARE-A careful study and analysis is made of some of Shakespeare's tragedies and comedies. Others are read rapidly. Written critiques are required. Elective. Three hours a week, one semester. 26. THE NOVEL-The development of the novel from its earliest form to that of the modern short story. Each student is required to do a certain amount of collateral reading and prepare written reviews and criticisms. The text-book is Cross'. Elective. Three hours a week, one semester. 27. THE SHORT STORY-The history and technique of the short story. A critical analysis of a representative collection of short stories, supplemented by plots and stories required from the students. Texts: Albright and Ashmun. Elective. ,Three hours a week, one semester. 28. AMERICAN POETRY-A survey of the most characteristic works of Bryant, Poe, Emerson, Longfellow, Whittier, Holmes, Lowell, Whitman, Lanier, and Riley. Elective. Three hours a week, one semester. 29. BROWNING AND TENNYSON-A critical study of a few selec– tions from each poet and the rapid reading of others. Elective. Three hours a week, one semester. 30. LITERARY COMPOSITION-The writing of interpretative and critical themes based on readings selected from the prose and poetry of English and American literature. Elective. Two hours a week, one semester. 31. EARLY ENGLISH LITERATURE-A history of English liter– ature from the Celtic period t o the Elizabethan age, witb the critical analysis of prose, poetic, and dramatic works of each period. Elective. Three hours a week, one semester. 32. MODERN ENGLISH LITERA'fURE-A history of English lit– er ature from t he Elizabethan period t hrough the Victorian age, with the critical analysis of prose, poetic, and dramatic works of each period.
