DEPARTMENTS AND COURSES 47 104 NATURE STUDY A course fulfilling half the science requirements for prospective elmentary teach– ers in which the study is concentrated on non-technical ornithology. Identifica– tion and distribution of local bird life constitutes the core of the course. Outside readings are also required. 2 three hr. field trips per week-4 hrs. credit-given the second semester of every year. (Also required of all minors). 202 PLANT ScIENCE A course required of all majors and minors in which the principles of plant organization and function are studied with particular emphasis on spermato– phytes. Some plant ecology and genetics are included. 3 lectures and one 3 hour laboratory per week-4 hours credit. Given the second semester of every other year. 221-222 GENERAL ZooLOGY A comprehensive full year's study required of all majors and minors. The princi– ples of organization, physiology, ecology, development, genetics, and evolution in animals are thoroughly presented, and a survey of representative animal forms both invertebrate and vertebrate is included. 3 lectures and one 3 hour labora– tory per weefl-4 hours credit per semester. Given every year. 351 ENTOMOLOGY A comprehensive study of insects and their near relatives in which principles of external and internal morphology, histology, physiology, development, and life histories are emphasized. Considerable time is also devoted to taxonomy and economic importances and the student is expected to classify his own insect col– lection to families. Prerequisite-Zoology 221-222. Required of all majors. 3 lec– tures and two 3 hour laboratories per week-4 hours credit. Given the first semester every other year. 401 EXPERIMENTAL PHYSIOLOGY Advanced. Laboratory work in certain phases of animal physiology, both in– vertebrate and vertebrate. Emphasis is on experiments with respiration, endoc– rine, neural and behavior physiology particularly in aguatic forms. Prerequisite– Zoology 221-222, college courses in physics and chemistry. Required of all majors -5 hours of laboratory per week-2 hours credit. Given the first semester every other year. 412 p ARASITOLOGY A tudy m medical zoology in which the principles of parasitism are encoun– tered and a complete survey made of the protozoan, helminth, and arthropod parasites of man and domesticated animals. Emphasis is given the morphology, identificat10n, life history, ecology, pathology and control of each individual parasite. Attention is al o given to the laboratory preparation of parasites and di gnostic techniques. Prerequisite Zoology 221-222. Required of all majors. 3 lecture and two 3 hour laboratone per week. 4 hour credit. Given the second ~emt t r ery other year.
