DEPARTMENTS AND COURSES EDUCATION ELEMENTARY EDUCATION I 201-203 TEACHING ARITHMETIC 49 A study of the methods of teaching arithmetic in the first six grades, the princi– ples upon which they are based, and the influence of scientific studies upon the course of study and methods. Special emphasis on organization and presentation of lessons. Two or four hours credit. 202-204 TEACHING LANGUAGE ARTS The technique of teaching reading, spelling, wntmg, languages in the elemen– tary grades. Different methods evaluated; basic texts examined, vocabularies and tests studies; charts and lesson plans made, demonstrations given. Six hours credit. 206 CHILD GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT A study of the nature of the child, his needs, and his development. Emphasis on more recent developments in educational psychology for the inexperienced teacher. Three hours credit. 241 CHILDRE 's LITERATURE A study, from the literary and educational point of view, of the best literature for elementary schol children, folk literature, fiction, poetry. Emphasis on deelopment of standards for selecting materials. Three hours credit. 300 TEACHING HANDWRITING The methodology of teaching handwriting in the elementary grades and the im– provement of writing ability. One hour credit. 330 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL MANAGEMENT The study of classroom organization and management with special attention given to the relationship of "discipline" to interest, organization of materials and a program, professional techniques, relationship to pupils, colleagues, superiors, parents and community. Two hours credit. 350 CoNTENT METHODS (TEACHING THE SocIAL STUDIES) ffecn e means of teaching history, geography, science and community life in the light of modern principles are studied. Three hours credit. 400 LEME TARY STUDENT TEACHING Required for State School Certificate. Five hours credit are given for teaching one hour a day for fifteen weeks.
