Departments and Courses DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION The education department of the college exists to give professional training for students who wish to teach in public or private schools. Admission to education courses is open to all students who maintain a grade point average of not less than 1.5, and those who demonstrate the proper characteristics needed to be suc– cessful in the teaching profession. For a major in education in the secondary field the fol– lowing courses (101, 213, 341, 402, 460), plus a methods course in the students chosen teaching field and electives to make a total of twenty-four hours are required. Teaching fields are offered in the following: 1. Science (18 hours) 2. English (15 hours) 3. History (15 hours) 4. Languages (15 hours) 5. Social Studies (40 hours) 6. Physical Education (24 hours) 7. Music (24 hours) Elementary Education: (Not being offered in 1955-56, it is hoped that work can be done in this field in the very near future.) 101 INTRODUCTION TO EDUCATION A course designed for prospective teachers. It presents a survey of the American school system, its growth, structure, philosophy, problems and trends. Prerequisite to all other education courses. Three hours credit. 213 ED CATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY A study of the fundamental psychological factors and -principles that form the background and underlying conditions for learning and teaching. Prerequisite: General Psychology. Three hours credit. 47
