401, 402 SOCIAL AND CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES*** ('61·'62) An intensified study of the family, religion, class structure, rural and urban development, reform movements, the arts, science, and education as known in the United States. A brief survey of colonial society is included. Three credit hours each semester 403, 404 HISTORY OF THE SOUTH** ('59-'60) An intensified study of the South from 1820 to the present. Special attention is focused on the problem of slavery, sectional controversy, southern nationality, the civil war, reconstruction, restoration of home rule, general cultural and economic de– velopment.
