72 Cedarville College 341 American Romanticism 3 hours Major writers of the American romantic movement are studied against the social and philosophical background of their time. Emphasis on Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman. Prerequisite: LL232 (Alternate, even years) 342 American Novel 3 hours The purpose of the course is to study the historical development of the American novel and to read and analyze the writings of major American novelists from Cooper to Faulkner. Prerequisite: LL232 or 233 (Alternate, odd years) 343 Contemporary American literature 3 hours A study of the development of American literature from 1900 to present, with emphasis on the major poets and novelists.
