Language and Literature 73 222 Introduction to Mass Media - W 5 hours A survey of contemporary mass media with attention to the nature, role, structure, influence, operation, and problems of newspapers, magazines, radio and television news, and journalistic activities. See SP 232. 225 Creative Writing - W, S 3 hours An emphasis on writing the short story and poetry to help the student perfect his own style. 305 The English Language - W 5 hours Emphasis on the historical development of the English language and its structure as described by the structural and generative grammars. Required of all English majors. 306 Principles of Linguistics - S 3 hours An introduction to the basic linguistic concepts and an introduction to synchronic and diachronic approaches to the study of language. 307 Modem Grammar - A 5 hours A review of traditional grammar with emphasis on current methods of grammatical analysis. Required of all majors with English as a teaching field. Prerequisite: 305 or 306 352 Developmental Reading - S 5 hours Includes basic philosophies, current practices, testing and evaluation for reading disabil– ities and corrections, and materials and methods utilized in the teaching of reading in the secondary schools. Laboratory experiences included. 380 Practicum in Reading: Diagnostic and Remediation Techniques 3 hours Experience in the use of formal and informal testing to diagnose various types of devel– opmental and remedial reading problems. Emphasis upon individual assessment tech– niques in identification, testing and causation of reading difficulty. Experience in the techniques of tutoring pupils having reading problems. Development of instructional strategies of diagnostic teaching. Prerequisite: ED 340, LL 352 B. WORLD, ENGLISH AND AMERICAN LITERATURE 231 World Literature - A, W, Su 5 hours Survey of great works of the Western world which reflect the developing continental literary and intellectual thought. The course is organized so that it may be repeated as 231 B by arrangement with the instructor. Prerequisite: English 130 232 Major American Writers - W, Su 5 hours Emphasis on the major writers from Colonial times through "The American Renaissance." Prerequisite: English 130 233 Major American Writers - Sp, Su 5 hours Emphasis on the major American writers from the Civil War through World War 11. Special attention is given to the literary experimentation of the age. Prerequisite: English 130 241 Major British Writers - A, Su 5 hours Emphasis on the major writers and works from Beowulf to 1800. Prerequisite: English 130 242 Major British Writers - W, Su 5 hours Emphasis on the major writers and works from 1800 to World War 11. Prerequisite: English 130 331 The English Novel 3 hours A reading and critical analysis of representative novels of the period from Richardson to Hardy. (Alternate, odd years) 332 Poetry of the Romantic Period 3 hours A study of the characteristics of Romanticism and the writings of the major poets of this period. (Alternate, even years) 333 Milton and the Metaphysical Poets 3 hours The major prose and poetry of John Milton, particularly Paradise Lost, and selected works of the major Metaphysical poets of the 17th century.
