84 Cedarville College COURSES IN MUSIC THEORY 100 Elements of Music - W 3 hours An introduction to the basic materials and concepts of music. Required of all music majors and minors and all elementary education majors who do not score sufficiently on the Music Proficiency Abstract. 111-112-113 Fundamental Theory - A, W, Sp 5 hours each quarter A study of fundamental harmonies and tone relations used in musical composition, approached through analysis, ear training, and keyboard work. Prerequisite: Music Theory 100 or a passing grade on the Music Proficiency Abstract. The student must be able to play easy hymns on the piano. 211-212-213 Advanced Theory - A, W, Sp 3 hours each quarter An analysis of standard literature, and experimental writing in various forms. Prerequi– site: Music Theory 111-112-113 and a sight-reading ability of standard church hymns on the piano 214 Functional Piano - A 3 hours The development of skills in harmonization at sight, transposition, playing by ear and other keyboard harmony skills specifically designed to meet the piano proficiency require– ments. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor 310 Counterpoint - Sp 3 hours A survey of polyphonic music of the 18th Century including analysis and experimental writing of species counterpoint, canons, two part inventions, fugal expositions, and trio sonata movements. Prerequisite: MU 211-212-213 (Alternate, odd years) 311 Form and Analysis - A 3 hours A study of the structure of music approached through analysis of representative works. Prerequisite: MU 211-212-213 (Alternate, odd years) 413 Orchestration - Sp 3 hours A development of skills in scoring for various instrumental groups. Prerequisite: MU 211-212-213 (Alternate, even years) COURSES IN HISTORY AND LITERATURE 230 Music History - Medieval and Renaissance - W 3 hours Emphasis on Medieval and Renaissance music, the beginnings of opera, and the works of Monteverdi and Heinrich Schutz. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor (Alternate, odd years) 231 Music History - Baroque - A, Su 3 hours Special attention given to the music of Monteverdi, Schutz, Lully, Purcell, Corelli, Vivaldi, Rameau, Bach, and Handel. Prerequisite: MU 111-112-113 (Alternate, even years) 232 Music History - The Classic Period - W 3 hours A study of the vocal and instrumental music of the late 18th Century with particular emphasis given to the music of Gluck, Haydn, and Mozart. Prerequisite: MU 111-112-113 (Alternate, even years) 332 Music History - Romantic - W, Su 3 hours A study of the music of the Romantic period from Beethoven to Impressionism. Prerequi– site: MU 111-112-113 333 Music History - Modern - Sp 3 hours A study of modern music from Impressionism to the present. Prerequisite: MU 211-212- 213 and MU 332 334 Choral literature - A 4 hours A survey of choral music from the Renaissance to the present. Prerequisite: MU 211-212- 213 (Alternate, even years) 335 Symphonic Literature - W 4 hours A survey of orchestral music from the classic period to the present. Prerequisite: MU 311 or permission of the instructor (Alternate, odd years)
