Prerequisite: SMl 82-183 and admission to the Teacher Education Pro– gram 340 The Teaching of Reading 5 hours Includes basic principles, current practices, problems and issues, evaluation of textbooks and materials utilized in reading. Laboratory work with children in the Reading Center provides diagnostic/prescriptive experiences with the use of appropriate modern hard/software. Pre– requisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Progam 350 The Teaching of Language Arts and Social Studies 5 hours Appraisal of the language arts and social studies - objectives, techniques of instruction, experience units, teaching aids and resource materials. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program 352 Developmental Reading - A 5 hours Includes basic philosophies, current practices, testing and evaluation for reading disabilities and corrections, and materials and methods utilized in the teaching of reading in the secondary schools. Laboratory experiences included. 360 Measurement and Evaluation 3 hours Test construction, standardized testing, interpretation of educational data, and selected pupil appraisal techniques, Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program 380 Practicum in Reading: Diagnostic and Remediation Techniques 3 hours Experience in the use of formal and informal testing to diagnose various types of develop– mental and remedial reading problems. Emphasis upon individual assessment techniques in identification, testing and causation of reading difficulty. Experience in the techniques of tutoring pupils having reading problems. Development of instructional strategies of diagnostic teaching. Prerequisite: ED 340, LL 352 400 Independent Study in Education 1-4 hours Investigation of contemporary topics in education through reading, writing or creative pro– jects. Prerequisite: 15 hours in Education 401 Early Childhood Education 4 hours A consideration of the function of pre-school education in the total life of the child including a study of the research and theory of his physical, mental, emotional, and social growth. Dis– cussion of current pre-school and primary programs. 403 Kindergarten Curriculum and Methods 4 hours A study of purposes, content, methods and resources for teaching and learning in kinder– garten. Field experience included. 440 Special Student Teaching 9-15 hours Occasionally unusual situations arise which entail special provisions; e.g. summer school student teaching for experienced teachers. 450 Supervised Teaching and Seminar 15 hours Most directed teaching is done in nearby schools. Opportunities for placement in Christian schools and on the mission field are available. One quarter must be reserved. The seminar in– cludes a study of contemporary topics in education. Prerequisite: All required education courses.
