Music 81 General Music Emphasis: A m1n1mum of fifty quarter hours (plus methods courses) including MU 111-112-113; MU 331, 332, 333; MU 214, 260, 363, 373; Nine hours of private instruction and five hours of ensembles. Methods courses: MU 372 and 374. Bachelor of Music Education The following courses are required for the Bachelor of Music Education degree, and also for the Special Music Certificate which enables one to teach vocal, instrumental, or general music in the schools in grades one through twelve. General Education - the same general education requirements as for the B.A. degree. No minor field of study is required. Professional Education - Psychology 160, and 260 or 270; Education 200, 201, 301, and 450. Student teaching must be at both the elementary and secondary levels. Music Specialization - A minimum of seventy-five quarter hours is required. A senior recital must be presented. Often the specified number of applied hours will be exceeded. Vocal Emphasis: MU 111-112-113, 211-212-213, 413; MU 331, 332, 333; MU 214, 260, 363, 370, 372, 373, 374; three hours of MU 400 in vocal literature, nine hours private instruction and seven hours of ensembles. COURSES IN MUSIC THEORY 100 Elements of Music - W 3 hours An introduction to the basic materials and concepts of music. Required of all music majors and minors and all elementary education majors who do not score sufficiently on the Music Proficiency Abstract. 111-112-113 Fundamental Theory - A, W, Sp 5 hours each quarter A study of fundamental harmonies and tone relations used in musical composi- .. lion, approached through analysis, ear training, and keyboard work. Prerequisite: Music Theory 100 or a passing grade on the Music Proficiency Abstract. The student must be able to play easy hymns on the piano. 211-212-213 Advanced Theory - A, W, Sp 3 hours each quarter An analysis of standard literature, and experimental writing in various forms. Prerequisite: Music Theory 111-112-113 and a sight-reading ability of standard church hymns on the piano. 214 Functional Piano - A 3 hours The development of skills in harmonization at sight, transposition, playing by ear and other keyboard harmony skills specifically designed to meet the piano proficien– cy requirements. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor. 310 Counterpoint - Sp . 3 hours A survey of polyphonic music of the 18th Century including analysis and ex– perimental writing of species counterpoint, canons, two part inventions, fugal expositions, and trio sonata movements. Prerequisite: MU 211-212-213. (Alternate, odd years)
