Music Bachelor of Music Education The following courses are required for the Bachelor of Music Education degree, and also for the Special Music Certificate which enables one to teach vocal, instru– mental, or general music in the schools in grades one through twelve. General Education - the same general education requirements as for the B.A. degree. No minor field of study is required. Professional Education - Psychology 160, and 260 or 270; Education 200, 201, 301, and 450. Student teaching must be at both the elementary and second– ary levels. Music Specialization - A minimum of seventy-five quarter hours is required. A senior recital must be presented. Often the specified number of applied hours will be exceeded. Vocal Emphasis: MU 111-112-113, 211-212-213, 413; MU 331, 332, 333; MU 214, 260, 363, 370, 372, 373, 374; three hours of MU 400 in vocal literature, nine hours private instruction and seven hours of ensembles. Instrumental Emphasis: MU 111-112-113, 211-212-213, 413; MU 331, 332, 333; MU 260, 362, 370, 372, 374, 377; MU 187, 191, 193, 194 and one hour of private instruction elective; nine hours of private instruction and seven hours of en– sembles. General Music Emphasis.MU 111-112-113, 211-212-213, 413; MU 331, 332, 333; and two hours of MU 400 in folk music; MU 214, 260, 363, 370, 372, 373, 374; nine hours of private instruction and seven hours of ensembles. COURSES IN MUSIC THEORY 100 Elements ol Music - W 3 hours An introduction to the basic materials and concepts of music. Required of all music majors and minors and all elementary education majors who do not score sufficiently on the Music Proficiency Abstract. ·111-112-113 fundamental Theory 1-11-111-A, W, Sp 5 hours each quarter A study of fundamental harmonies and tone relations used in musical composition, ap– proached through analysis, ear training, and keyboard work. Prerequisite: Music Theory 100 or a passing grade on the Music Proficiency Abstract. The student must be able to play easy hymns on the piano. 211-212-213 Theory IV-V-VI -A, W, Sp 3 hours each quarter An analysis of standard literature, and experimental writing in various forms. Prerequisite: Music Theory 111-112-113 and a sight-reading ability of standard church hymns on the pi– ano. 214 Funclional Piano - A 3 hours The development of skills in harmonization at sight, transposition, playing by ear and other keyboard harmony skills specifically designed to meet the piano proficiency requirements. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor. 310 Counterpoint-Sp 3 hours A survey of polyphonic music of the 18th Century including analysis and experimental writ– ing of species counterpoint, canons, two part inventions, fugal expositions, and trio sonata movements. Prerequisite: MU 211-212-213. (Alternate, odd years) 311 Form and Analysis -W 3 hours A study of the structure of music approached through analysis of representative works. Prerequisite: MU 211-212-213. (Alternate, odd years) 413 Orchestration -A 3 hours A development of skills in scoring for various instrumental groups. Prerequisite: MU 211- 212-213. (Alternate, even years)
