PHYSICS 71-271, 71-272, 71-273 General Physics 5 hours each quarter Basic concepts of mechanics, heat, sound, light, electricity, magnetism, and modern physics. Four lectures an~ one 2-hour laboratory per week. Prerequisite: 71-281 Analytic Geometry and Calculus. 71-276 Electricity and Magnetism 5 hours Basic concepts of electricity and magnetism, AC and DC cir– cuits, electromagnetism, basic electronic circuits.Prerequisite: 71-272 General Physics. (Alternate, odd years) 71-378, 71-379 Modern Physics 5 hours each quarter An extension of basic concepts of modern physics learned in General Physics. Topics include structure of matter, electricity and light, kinetic theory, x-rays, nuclear reactions, atomic and nuclear structure, radioactivity. Prerequisite: 71-273 General Physics. (Alternate, even years) MATHEMATICS 71-281, 71-282, 71-283 Analytic Geometry and Calculus 5 hours each quarter An integrated course of the basic concepts of analytic geometry and calculus. Includes theory of limits, derivatives, integrals, conic sections, solid analytic geometry, partial derivatives, multi– ple integrals, infinite series, differential equations. Prerequisite: 71-184, 71-185 Introduction to Analysis or equivalent. 71-384 Probability and Statistics -A 5 hours Probability, binomial, normal, t, chi square, and F distribu– tions; regression and analysis of variance are studied from theo– retical and practical viewpoints. Prerequisite: 71-282 Analytic Geometry and Calculus. 103 71-387 Differential Equations 5 hours A study of the standard techniques employed in the solution of differential equations with emphasis on those arising from physi– cal problems. Prerequisite: 71-283 Analytic Geometry and Cal– culus. 71-388, 71-389 Advanced Calculus 5 hours Topics in differential calculus, functions, and series. Includes partial differential equations and Fourier Series. Prerequisite: 71-283 Analytic Geometry and Calculus. (Alternate, odd years) 71-394 Linear Algebra - A 5 hours An introduction to the algebra of linear equations, including determinants, matrices, vector spaces, eigenvalues, and eigen– vectors, and linear mapping. Prerequisite: 71-283 Analytic Geometry and Calculus. (Alternate, even years) 71-396 Modern Algebra - Sp 5 hours Introduction of sets and logic, and the development of algebra– ic systems, groups, rings, integral domains, and fields. Prerequi– site: 71-282 Analytic Geometry and Calculus. (Alternate, even years) 71-480 Topics in Mathematics 2-5 hours Various topics offered as interest may demand. Intended for majors in mathematics. Permission of instru~tor requi~·ed. Some typical topics: matrix algebra, vector an.alys1s, num~nca~ analy– sis, introduction to computer programmmg, and partial differen– tial equations. 71-490 Independent Study in Mathematics 1-4 hours An opportunity to perform independent research in the various branches of mathematics and allied fields of application. Submis– sion and approval of a research proposal must precede registra– tion. Prerequisite: Major in mathematics and permission of re– search advisor.
