Topics covered include: number properties, numeration systems, and informal geometry. Prerequisite: Major in elementary education or permission of in– structor. 31-201 Prelimina1·y Student Involvement 0 Each student arranges five full, consecutive days in a Christian school during which he observes and participates in classroom ac– tivities. A follow-up report is required. 31-230 Arts and Crafts in the Elementary School 3 hours Philosophy, methods, and materials of art instruction. Em– phasizes creative work, using simple tools and inexpensive mate– rials. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. 31-240 The Christian School 3 hours Purposes and practices unique to the Christian school; integrat– ing Christian philosophy and subject matter. Historical develop– ment of Christian schools in the United States with implications for present trends. 31-250 Early Childhood Education 4 hours A consideration of the function of preschool education in the total life of the child including a study of the research and theory of his physical, mental, emotional, and social growth. Discussion of current preschool and primary programs. 31-251 Kindergarten Curriculum and Methods 5 hours A study of purposes, content, methods, and resources for teaching and learning in kindergarten. Field experience included. 31-235 Measurement and Evaluation 3 hours Test construction, standardized testing, interpretation of edu– cational data, and selected pupil appraisal techniques. 31-292 Children's Literaure 4 hours A survey of the early history, major types, and modern trends of literature for children from preschool through grade eight. So– cial and personal value of literature is studied. 31-301 Preliminary Student Involvement 1 hour Each student arranges five full, consecutive days in a public or Christian school during which he observes and participates in classroom activities. Follow-up report is required. Prerequisite: 31-201. 31-305 Junior Practicum 5 hours A ten-week field experience required of secondary music and physical education students. The practicum must be completed prior to student teaching and is on a Credit/No credit basis. Pre– requisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program and Principles of Teaching or Music or Physical Education Methods. 31-310 Supervised Field Experience 1-5 hours A one- to five-hour credit placement in an elementary or secon– dary classroom. The assignment is designed to give a transfer stu– dent or a student repeating other field experience an analogous ex– perience to those for the existing teacher education classes. 31-316, 31-317 Methods of Teaching 10 hours A combination of methods of teaching, clinical experience, and field experience in secondary schools with attention to com– bining the theory and practice of teaching and learning in each of the teaching fields. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Edu– cation Program. 31-321 Philosophy of Education 3 hours A critical analysis of educational philosophies and their impact on Christian educational philosophy. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program or 21-220 Introduction to Philosophy. 31-352 Developmental Reading 5 hours Includes basic philosophies, current practices, testing and eva– luation for reading disabilities and corrections; and materials and methods utilized in the teaching of reading in the secondary schools. Laboratory experiences are included.
