Emphasis is strictly in developing speed and accuracy and proofreading skills; no formatting is included in this course. 11-181, 11-182, 11-183 Typing-A, W, Sp 3hours each quarter Keyboard mastery with emphasis on correct techniques, development of speed and accuracy, and emphasis upon typing problems involving letter styles, business forms, reports, manuscripts, and tables. 11-184, 11-185, 11-186 Shorthand-A, W, Sp 3 hours each quarter Introduction to Gregg Shorthand Series 90, emphasizing basic princi– ples, brief forms, phrasing, and development of speed and accuracy. 11-187 Word Processing Concepts-A, Sp 2hours An introduction to the impact of technology on the business office. The theory and practice of word and information processing is em– phasized. The operation of word processing equipment using basic text editing procedures is included. Prerequisite: 11-182 Typing. 11-188 Office Machines-A, Sp 3hours Instruction and practice in operation of modem office machines and equipment including adding, duplicating, calculating, and transcribing machines. Prerequisite: 11-181 Typing. 11-189 Electronic Calculator Applications -A, Sp 1hour Comprehensive instruction in the essentials of business mathematics including chain discounts, depreciation, and dividend yields. Prerequi– site: 11-105 Accounting Fundamentals. 11-281, 11-282 Dictation and Transcription-A, W 3 hours each quarter Emphasis upon mailable transcription from symbol shorthand and from machine transcription. Prerequisite: 11-186 Shorthand. 11-284 Secretarial Procedures- W 3 hours Introduction to a wide variety of modem office practices, including proper telephone and communication techniques, records management, duplication and copy processes, word processing, organizing and plan– ning work, the use of office machines, and other secretarial duties. Pre– requisite: 11-182 Typing, 11-188 Office Machines. 11-285 Records Management - Sp 3 hours Instruction in the fundamentals that are essential to managing the re– cords of an office. Alphabetic, geographic, numeric, subject, and chronologic methods of filing are discussed. Also included are methods for storing various records with a concentration on a variety of manage– ment aspects of records control and retention. 11-286 Legal Office Procedures - Sp 2 hours Designed to develop an understanding of various facets of the law of– fice. Topics include: legal procedures, documentation, legal filing pro– cedures, document preparation, and litigation procedures. A text-work– book with simulation recordings is utilized. Prerequisites: 11-186 Short– hand, 11-282 Dictation and Transcription, 11-284 Secretarial Proce– dures. 11-287 Medical Office Procedures-Sp 2 hours An introduction to the responsibilities of a medical secretary. Areas covered include: medicolegal communications, medical record prepara– tion, billing, health insurance procedures, and medical society functions. Prerequisites: 11-186 Shorthand, 11-282 Dictation and Transcription, 11-284 Secretarial Procedures. 11-288 Information Processing - W, Sp 2 hours Combines the operational knowledge of data processing and word pro– cessing. Includes an overview of telecommunications, electronic mail, and other sophisticated communications systems. Prerequisites: 11-121 Introduction to Data Processing, 11-183 Typing, 11-187 Word Pro– cessing Concepts, 11-216 Business Communications. 11-289 Secretarial Internship- W, Sp 5hours Practical business experience as a general secretary; individually de– signed to meet the interests of the student.
