Stanley Cedarville College, through the Department of Nursing, offers a baccalaureate program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). This program is designed to prepare professional leaders and practitioners of nursing for clinical practice. This four-year nursing program builds upon liberal arts, sciences, psy– chology, management, and research courses to challenge students to develop skills and principles necessary for professional nurs– ing. The philosophy of the faculty of the Department of Nursing is consistent with the mission of Cedarville College and the profes– sion of nursing. Thus, the faculty are committed to the con– tinuance of their own and their students' learning and to the belief that the individual has intrinsic value because each person is created in the image of God. Faculty believe that nursing takes its roots from God-like concern and attributes: compassion, nurtur– ing, giving. We believe that a lifestyle incorporating the knowl– edge that One greater than the individual is controlling life's events, facilitates adaptation and, thus, influences health. People are continually changing and adapting as they interact with their internal and external environments. Preservation of an individual's health implies concern for one's being - spiritual, mental, physical, and social. Application of beliefs about people, health, societal systems, adaptation, and nursing process pro– vides a framework for nursing care for individuals and families within their community and society. Health is a dynamic state, and the level of wellness is deter– mined by the ability to adapt to alterations in or to influence the systems encompassing one's life. The health care system is one component of the society or setting in which people live, learn, and work. All individuals should have access to quality health care and recognize their corresponding responsibility in maintain– ing their own health. The goal of health care is to assist people to achieve optimal levels of wellness in a rapidly changing, multi– dimensional society. Baccalaureate nursing prepares liberally educated persons to function as professional nurses in a variety of nursing roles and health care settings. These nurses consistently and systematically apply knowledge and theories to assist individuals of all ages, families, and communities to attain, maintain, and/or regain opti– mal health. Functions assumed by baccalaureate educated nurses are caregiving, teaching/counseling, health supervision, manage– ment/leadership, and health screening. Implementation of these roles requires a holistic approach involving the nursing process, critical thinking, therapeutic use of self, communication skills, decision making, research attitude, scientific inquiry, and skill in manipulation of data. Nurses should assume leadership both inde– pendently and interdependently with other health workers in im– proving health care and in planning to meet future health needs. Teaching strategies in baccalaureate nursing education are or– ganized to involve the student in a reciprocal teaching-learning process that permits and stimulates constant and continuous growth as a person. The baccalaureate degree program provides a base for graduate education. Faculty facilitate learning by serving as scholars/role models in clinical practice and classroom set– tings, as resource persons for validation of content and proce– dures, and as providers of a variety of learning experiences. Fac– ulty attempt to be persons whose professional and personal con– duct reflect behaviors that scholarly students and health profes– sionals view as worthy of emulation. National. Cedarville College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The Department of Nursing will apply for National League for Nursing accredita– tion after the first class graduates in 1985.
