1985-1986 Academic Catalog

11-221 FORTRAN Programming-A, Sp 4 hours Problem solving is emphasized as algorithms and techniques useful in practical business application are introduced in programming arithmetic, logic, and data handling functions. Prerequisite: 11-124 Computer Pro– gramming - BASIC. 11-224, 11-225 ~ ...... ~~~~ W, Sp 4 hours each quarter The course introduces the basic program structure of a high level pro– gramming language as business-oriented programs are prepared and ex– ecuted. Advanced topics are developed with stress upon more efficient programming techniques, documentation, and structured programming. Prerequisite: 11-124 Computer Programming- BASIC: 11-324 System Simulation - W 4 hours Simulation is a problem-solving technique that has its greatest use in the study of models of real systems. The course introduces the principles of simulation and the application of a simulation language to studies of queuing systems, inventory systems, and network analysis. Each student designs and runs a computer model. Prerequisites: 11-211 Quantitative Methods, 11-221 FORTRAN Programming. 11-326 Systems -A 4 hours A study that provides an understanding of the duties of the systems analyst together with an understanding of the specific methods and tech– niques for conducting a systems project - from the preliminary investi– gation of the project through the systems implementation and evaluation. Prerequisite: 11-221 FORTRAN Program or 11-224 COBOL Program– ming. 11-327 Systems - W 4 hours Advanced study of systems development. Emphasis on strategies and techniques of structured analysis and structured design for producing logical methodologies for dealing with complexity in the de– velopment of information systems. Prerequisite: 11-326 Systems Analysis. 11-328 Database - Sp 4 hours Introduction to application program development in a database envi– ronment with an emphasis on loading, modifying and querying the database using a host language (COBOL). Discussion and application of data structures, indexed and direct file organizations, models of data in– cluding hierarchial, network, and relational. Prerequisite: 11-224 COBOL Pro,gramrr1.mg 11-421 - W 3 hours Application of computer programming and system development con– cepts, principles and practices to a comprehensive system development project. A team approach is used to analyze, design, and document realistic systems of moderate complexity. Use of project management ~ethods, project scheduling and control techniques, formal presenta– tions, and group dynamics in the solution of information systems prob– lems. Development of database to support the system. Prequisites: 11-225 COBOL Programming, 11-326 Systems Analysis. 11-231, 11D232 Principles of Economics W, Sp hours each quarter A study of fundamental economic principles as an aid in understanding our free enterprise system. Emphasis is placed upon such economic con– cepts as production, consumption, exchange, and price distribution. 11-313 Government and Business W hours A study of the governmental agencies and their effect an American business. Case studies and current events are developed to show the trends and status of various laws and regulations. The economic impact and difficulties which arise in managing a business are reviewed. Pre– requisite: 11-231, 11-232 Principles of Economics. 11-331 Money and -A 4 hours A study of the principles of money, credit, and banking; and the opera– tion of the banking system. Prerequisite: 11-231, 11-232 Principles of Economics. 11-334 History of Economic - Sp 4 hours Principal figures in the development of economic ideas, and the con– tribution of each period of economnic thought from the mercantilist to the present. Prerequisite: 11-231, 11-232 Principles of Economics. (Alternate, even years) 11-335 Comparative Economic Systems - Sp 4 hours Analysis of the major economic systems existing in the world today. This involves, among others, capitalism, socialism, communism, and fascism. The economies of France, China, Japan, and Yugoslavia are considered. Prerequisites: 11-231, 11-232 Principles of Economics. (Alternate, odd years) 11-337 Labor Economics - Sp 4 hours An examination of the role of unions and the labor market in a free en– terprise system. Emphasis is given to the impact of unions as a social in– stitution in the collective bargaining process. Labor legislation and the labor movement are studied from both a historical and current perspec– tive. Prerequisites: 11-231, 11-232 Principles of Economics. (Alternate, odd years) 11-339 Public Finance Sp 4 hours A consideration of the financing of local, state, and federal govern– ments. Much attention is given to three functions of government: stabili– zation, distribution, and allocation. All major taxes which are present in
