Prerequisite: S 1-371 Music for Elementary Teachers. 51-373 Vocal Methods - W 5 hours Philosophy, objectives, and techniques of offering vocal instruction al all levels with emphasis on vocal production, pedagogical approaches, repertoire, and program building. Prerequisite: Two quarters of S 1-185 Voice Class. 51-374 Music in the Middle School-Sp 3 hours A study of materials, methods of procedure, supervision, and psychol– ogical aspects of teaching music in the middle school. (Alternate, even years) CONDUCTING 51-260 Conducting I-A 3 hours The basic technique of the baton; fundamentals of score reading; con– ducting patterns applied to elements of interpretation, tone, balance, and diction. Prerequisite: Satisfactory performance on music placement abstract or S 1-10 I Theory I. 51-362 Conducting II- W 3 hours Development of ability to interpret the larger forms of instrumental lit– erature and to read from full score. Prerequisite: S 1-260 Conducting I. 51-365 Chornl RepertoiI·e and Practicum - W 3 hours A reading laboratory for the purpose of surveying and evaluating choral literature for use in the church. The course includes practical con– ducting experience with the Campus Fellowship Choir. Prerequisite: S 1-260 Conducting I. (Alternate, odd years) PERFORMANCE Private instruction for credit in piano, voice, and orchestral and band instruments is available to all music majors. Students other than music majors will need special approval from the Music Department. Private instruction for credit on any instrument available may be arranged with qualified professional teachers for all students in the program. All students studying privately, whether music majors or not, are re– quired to attend all general recitals. They will also perform regularly in student recitals. Credit in performance lessons is based on a minimum of six hours of practice and one-haIf hour lesson per week for one hour of credit. An au– dition is required for initial registration. Continued registration is based upon satisfactory progress as determined each quarter by the instructor.
