COM-323 Organizational Communication- Sp 3 how-s A study of the usage of communication for the organizational structure. The course fo– cuses on major organizational theories, topics, and their communicative implications. In addition, the course focuses on the role of communication during interviews, conflict man– agement, negotiation, crisis management, and small group process in the organizational context. COM-324 mterpersonal Communication-Sp 3 hours The course centers on the nature and function of interpersonal communication as it oper– ates within casual encounters, families, organizations, and institutions. Implications for per– sonal, social, and professional growth will be considered. COM-325 mterviewing-W 3 hours This course focuses on the study of fundamental interviewing principles. Instruction and training are offered across a variety of interviewing situations, including informational, em– ployment, and persuasive interviews. COM-331 Communication in the mformation Age-Sp 3 hours A survey of the "new media" in electronic communication with an emphasis on the structures of the new media; their use in such areas as politics, education, business, and health care; the resulting changes in communication patterns in society; and the social and ethical issues raised by their use. COM-343 Principles of Play Directing-Sp 4 hours A practical study of play directing methods and techniques applied through class projects. Students will direct and perform play cuttings from a variety of dramatic literature types during the quarter. The class is especially helpful to education majors who will have to assist in educational theatre productions. No prerequisites. COM-345 Forensics/b:idividual Events-A, W: Sp 1to2 hours Students receive individual coaching for participation in intercollegiate speech competi– tion. Areas of competition include oral interpretation, public speaking, and limited prepara– tion events. Prerequisite: permission ofinstructor. COM-360 Teaching Speech-A, Sp 2 hours To be taken by majors seeking certification in speech, the course involves discussion of methods directly related to the speech discipline. The course is supplemental to EDUC-316 Principles ofTeaching. COM-361 Teaching Creative Dramatics 3 hours For elementary and secondary education majors seeking certification in speech. Acquaints students with concepts relating to creative dramatics and educational theatre productions for pre-K through 12. Includes role playing, improvisation, storytelling, theatre games, play therapy, pantomime and drama production. Prerequisite: Admission to Education Department and/or major in communication arts. COM-365 Clinical Methods in Teaching Speech-A, W: Sp 3 hours Students seeking certification for teaching speech will gain classroom experience. Twenty classroom hours will equal one credit hour. Assignments will be supervised by department staffmembers. (Credit/No Credit). COM-406Leadership-Sp 3 hours Leadership as a societal role is addressed through analysis of theory and observation of practitioners. A chronology of methodological approaches to the study of leadership is pre– sented. Assigned reading and class processing of ideas and theories prepares the student for observation and evaluation ofleaders in a variety of disciplines. Communication Arts 93 COM-410AdvancedArgument-A 4hours Prepares students for intercollegiate debate. Focuses on research and the creation and development of argumentative claims. Class members compete in intercollegiate tournaments. Prerequisite: COM-312Argumentation and Debate. COM-4ll lf1Story ofPublic Address-A 5 hours Classical rhetorical systems and theories are studied from the perspective of the rhetorical critic. The development of rhetoric is traced from the Greek period to the present. Analysis is made ofthe part rhetoric has played in the development ofphilosophies and nations. COM-461 through COM-465 Speech Seminar 3 hours Courses are available to the advanced student who desires intensive study in a particular area of speech communications. COM-461 Communication Ethics-Sp 3 hours Ethics are studied from the perspective of communication paradigms and structures. A seminar format is used. COM~462 Senior Project-Research 3 hours COM-463 Senior Project-Recital 3 hours Involves the development of recitalist skills through faculty mentoring. Continuation is determined by faculty approval. Students who do not meet required performance levels may request a second platform examination during the spring of the junior year. If required skill levels are not met, the student will not be permitted to complete the senior project requirement with a recital. All transfer students who desire to present a senior recital and who have completed required courses before coming to Cedarville must pass a platform skills examination their first quarter at Cedarville. Repeatable to 6 hours. Prerequisite: COM-123 Voice and Diction, COM-241 Fundamentals of Oral Interpretation, and COM- 243 Principles ofActing, all ofwhich must be taken by the fall ofthe junior year.
