30 Academic Information General Education Requirements The University requires a pattern of proficiencies and courses to help achieve institutional objectives. These objectives are designed to provide an educational experience that broadens the student's outlook and knowledge. The General Education pattern is: QuarterHours I. English andMathematics Proficiency .............................. 0-8 Each student upon initial emolhnent at the University must take placement examinations in English and mathematics. These examinations should be taken before, but not later than, the end of the first quarter of matriculation. A. English (0-4) Students may satisfy the English proficiency requirement through any one ofthe following methods: 1. Score 21 * or higher on the English section of the ACT; or 2. Score 500* or higher on the verbal section of the recentered SAT; or 3. Score 500 or higher on the CLEP English Composition exam; or 4. Score 25 or higheron the Cedarville University English Proficiency examination; or 5. Complete a course equivalent to the Cedarville University ENG-100 Basic English with a grade ofC or higher (A= 4.0 system) at another approved institution of higher learning prior to matriculation at Cedarville. The credits will not be transferred, but proficiency will be established and enrollment in ENG-110 English Composition I will be permitted; or 6. Complete a course equivalentto the Cedarville University ENG-110 English Composition I with a grade ofC- or higher at another approved institution ofhigher learning. Proficiencywill be satisfied and transfer credit will be awarded; or 7. If proficiency is not verified by any of the means listed in 1-6, the required proficiency must be achieved through a successful comple– tion of the course ENG-100 Basic English (four quarter hours credit) which is to be taken during the first quaiier of matriculation. These four credits do not apply to the 192 credits neededfor graduation. B. Mathematics (0-4) Students may satisfy the mathematics proficiency requirement through any one of the following methods: 1. Score 19* or higher on the mathematics section of the ACT; or 2. Score 500* or higher on the quantitative section of the recentered SAT; or 3. Score 48 or higher on the CLEP College Algebra exam; or 4. Score l 0 or higher on the Cedarville University Algebra proficiency examination; or 5. Complete a course equivalent to GMTH-100 Intermediate Algebra with at least a grade ofC- or higher (A= 4.0 system) at another approved institution of higher learning. The credits will not be transferred, but proficiency will be established and enrollment in college level quantitative courses will be permitted; or 6. Complete a course equivalent to the Cedarville University GMTH- 184 College Algebra with a grade ofC- or higher (A= 4.0 system) at another approved institution ofhigher learning. Proficiencywill be satisfied and transfer credit will be awarded. 7. If proficiency is not verified by any of the means listed in 1-6, the required proficiency must be achieved through successful completion of the course GMTH-100 Intermediate Algebra (four quarter hours credit), which is to be taken not later then the last term of the sophomore year. These four credits do not apply to the 192 quarter hours ofcredit neededfor graduation. *Standardized test scores (ACT, SAT) earned more than three years before matriculation will not be accepted to meet the proficiency requirement.
