Course Descriptions Activity Courses PE-100 through PE-212 Activity Courses 1-3 hours each Each course is designed to develop knowledge and skills in the respective activity area. Course requirements include examinations covering the activity subject, skills tests, class participation, and aerobics requirements. Grading options include letter grades or credit/ no credit. These courses may be used by non-majors to satisfy the physical education component ofthe General Ediication Requirements and by majors to satisfy specific curricular requirements. A variety of activity courses is offered each quarter. ' ' PEAS-170 Swimming I-A 1 hour Designed fornonswimmers or swimmers withminimal swimming background, introduces and develops three strokes: front crawl, back crawl, and elementa1y back. (Fee: $30) PEAS-172Swimming11-W 1 hour Focuses on refining the front crawl, back crawl, elementmy back– stroke, side stroke, and breast stroke. (Fee: $30) PEAS-173 Swimming III-Sp 1 hour Designed for swimmers who have gained experience through lessons or competitive swimming. Course develops stroke proficiency for all strokes including the butterfly. Includes an introduction to traii1ing regimen for lifetime fitness. (Fee: $30) PEAS-174 Lifeguarding Today-W, Sp 3 hours Provides lifeguards and lifeguard candidates skills :rndknowledge necessaiy to keep the patron of an aquatic facility safe in and around the water. Teaching of lifeguarding skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies, preparing candidates to recognize emergencies, respond quickly and effectively to emergen– cies, and prevent drownings and other incidents. Prerequisite: age 15; swim 500 yards co11ti11uously usi11g.fi·o11t crawl, breast stroke, and side stroke; s111face dive and submerge to a 111i11i11111111 depth of' seven feet, retrieve a 10 pound object and retum with it to the s111face; tread \Vaterfor two minutes using legs only. (Fee: $60) PEAS-175 Water Safety Instructor-S · 2 hours This course prepares, equips, and ce1iifies individm1ls in American Red Cross swimming and water safety with the purpose ofteaching water exploration, primmy skills, stroke readiness stroke refinement skill proficiency, advanced skills, basic water safety, emergency w~ter safety, and water safety instructor aide. (Fee: $60) Athletic Training PEA-155 Orientation to Athletic Training-A 2 hours Comprehensive overview of the athletic training profession. History of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the policies and procedures governing the profession. Exposes students to various athletic training settings including high school, college, clinic and professional sports. ' PEA-255 Basic Athletic Training-W 5 hours Focuses on prevention, management, and rehabilitation ofsport related injmies. Relevant topics include nutrition, injmycycle, and psychological considerations ofinjmy and recove1y. (Fee: $30) PEA-290 Sport Medicine Clinic-A,W,Sp Ohours Designed to expose the student to the sports medicine clinic. Students will spend a minimum of 25 hours in an appropriate sports medicine clinic to view first hand the role of the certified Athletic Trainer in this employment setting. Prerequisite: PEA-155 Orienta– tion to Athletic Training. PEA-356 Lower Extremity Injury Management-A 4 hours Comprehensive evaluation, management, and rehabilitation ofathletic injuries involving the lower extremity. Prerequisite: PEA-255 Basic Athletic Tmi11ing; BI0-216 Human Anatomy (may be taken concurrently). (Fee: $20) PEA-357 Upper Extremity ln,jury Management-W 4 hours Comprehensive evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries involving the upper extremity. Prerequisite: PEA- 255 Basic Athletic Training; BI0-216 Human Anatomy. (Fee: $20) · PEA-365 The1·apeutic Exercise for Athletic InJuries-Sp 3 hours Management of athletic injuries from the subacute phase through return to participation. Based on principles ofbiomechanics with emphasis on strength, flexibility, proprioception, endurance and agility. ' PEA-366 Modalities in Athletic Training-A 5 hours Overview ofthe modalities used in athletic training including cryo– therapy, superficial heat, TENS, ultrasound, laser, and exercise. (Fee: $20) PEA-368 Trunk/Spine Injury Management-Sp 4 hours Comprehensive evaluation, management, and rehabilitation ofathletic injuries involving the head, trunk, back, abdomen, and skin. Prerequi– site: PEA-255 Basic Athletic Training; BI0-216 Human Anatomy. (Fee: $15) PEA-391 Supervised Experiences in Athletic Training - ATF-A,W,Sp 3 hours Practicum course applying course content to real life situations. Students will be assigned to the Athletic Training Facility and assist the athletic training staffin providing services.
