Purpose The purpose of the Department of Music is to help develop an appreciation and understanding of the musical arts consis– tent with a biblical world view. The department seeks to help students gain an understanding of the responsibility of stewardship, service, and worship that is placed upon those to whom God has given musical talents. The Department ofMusic seeks to: 1. Provide cognitive tools for developing a comprehensive and integrated understanding of music the01y, history, and literahire. 2. Provide preparation in the skills of conducting, arranging, composing, and musical performance. 3. Provide opportunities for the development ofmusical sensitivity. 4. Provide a wide spectrum ofperformance and ministry opportunities. 5. Provide foundational knowledge for entrance into a chosen music vocation or graduate school. Personal Requirements New Students Auditions Applicants who wish to major in music should follow the standard procedures for admission. Satisfact01y completion of an audition is required for approval as a music major. Sh1dents should contact the Department of Music to obtain requirements and to schedule an audition. Scholarships Scholarship assistance is available to music majors who qualify on the basis of audition, academic record, and references. Additional academic scholarships and other types of financial assistance are available to qualified individu– als through the Cedarville University Financial Aid Office. Music Theory Exams All incoming sh1dents are required to pass the Music The01y Competency Exam. This test assures that sh1dents have the minimum knowledge necessaiy for college-level Music The01y courses. The exam is scheduled during "Getting Started" week activities. Students who have had significant Music Theory training prior to attending Cedarville may take the Music The01y Test– Out Exam. Contact the Music Office for additional information concerning this test. Continuing Students Music Student Handbook The Music Student Handbook is the authoritative statement on all department policy as it applies to the sh1dent. Each music sh1dent is responsible for following the policies and procedures contained in both the handbook and the university catalog. Private Lessons are open to all music majors and minors with curricular need. All others must audition and obtain permission from the department chairman before registering. Quarterly Performance Juries All music majors perform ajury in their primary performing area every quarter. The jmy is a short performance for a committee ofmusic faculty. The grade from the jury counts for 25% of the final grade in private lessons for the quaiter. For performance majors, the jury counts for 33% of the final grade in private lessons. Freshman Review After the third quarter of study, freshmen are evaluated by a committee ofmusic faculty to determine whether the student is making adequate progress to continue in the music program. Students who do not show satisfactory progress may be asked to change majors. Sophomore Check While the primary screen for continu– ance in the music program occurs at the Freshman Review, student achievement is also checked at the end of the Sopho– more year to confirm adequate progress toward degree completion and admittance to upper-level music courses. Piano Proficiency All music majors are expected to meet the minimum proficiency requirements for piano as estab– lished by the department. Music majors (other than keyboard) must successfully pass Class Piano III, or test out. Class Piano placement is done during the "Getting Staited" week. Students who are required to take piano class should do so during their freshman year. Ensemble Participation All music majors must take six quarters ofEnsemble for credit in order to fulfill the degree requirement. Beyond this requirement, however, students have the option of taking Ensembles either for one hour of credit or for "zero" credit. In either case, music majors are expected to participate in at least one ensemble every quarter they are enrolled. Recital and ProgramAttendance is required ofall music majors and minors. Each major must complete recital and program attendance eve1y quarter they are enrolled as a music major. Minors must take three consecutive quarters. Capstone Recital or Project In addition to performance in general student recitals throughout the college experience, all music majors are required to exhibit a level ofperformance for graduation which meets the requirements and standards of the department. For all majors, the capstone requirement is a senior recital. Fees Instrumental rental fee, per quarter, $25; practice room fee, per quarter, $50 (each hour of lesson credit). Classes that involve labs or college-provided student equipment may also have similar fees.
