The objective of the program is to break down the “silo mentality” present in traditional approaches to business education and help students develop a cross-disciplinary view of business. Students in the IBC take Principles of Marketing, Principles of Management, as well as Principles of Finance along with a course called the IBC Practicum. The first three courses are taught in such a way that they prepare the students for the activities and requirements of the fourth course. As part of the practicum, students must form their own company, write a business plan, obtain a loan, implement their plan, make a profit, and close down operations. While running their company, they must choose a local nonprofit organization to provide a minimum of 10 hours of work per student and all of their profits at the end of the semester. The IBC gives students more ownership of the learning process and provides practical, real-life experience of actually doing what they are learning about. In the years since its inception at Cedarville University, IBC students have donated 4,884 hours of service and $37,900 to nonprofit organizations. Advisory Council The School of Business Administration advisory council consists of entrepreneurs, business leaders, and educators representing diverse areas of business. Through annual meetings, these experts advise the University and evaluate its plans for strengthening Cedarville’s position of leadership in undergraduate business education.
