Personally and through the paper he argued and ' pleaded night and day, and every night and every day, and it may be doubted if his grief and b itte rn e ss in the hour.of his own defeat, .tw enty-eight years, later, were so keen ami deep a s th e sorrow w ith, which he announced to his readers th e overwhelm ing d efeat of Henry Clay. .From th a t moment th e b atteries of th e T ribune were turned upon th e slaveholders and th e abolition . ag itato rs in almost equal degree. Its fixed policy 'w a s th e identification o f th e whig party w ith th e canse of freedom. The Polb adm inistration was opposed w ith sturdiness and •igor. The annexation o f Texas and th e Mexican w a r brought, out a steady fire o f protest, and if* a s project* they were no t beaten, certain ly they were shorn o f th e ir w o rst ambi tions, and the,!* w orst resu lts w ere pre- , vented. During th is period o f th a T ribune’s history, from th e democratic triumph of 1844‘to th e whig victory of 1848, it took its place a s th e le ad ing American newspaper.
