Regardless of sympathy, the world's admiration cannot to withheld from men .who fight as strongly, and ns shrewdly ns the Boers. . . ........ There'is one highly commendable thing about ,tbe British commanders who have been licked, in South Africa; they own up like men, I f the London editors will refer to their eritieism of Gen. Shafter's little Cuban campaign they may get in a proper state of mind to write about the British defeats l>y the Boers. After awhile, .wewill1have n cable to Guam and can print the daily • quotations on marriages, pigs,’ chickens and Spanish friars, and lie free from this heart breaking sus pense. The difference in social standing be cause of the variation in rank of Admiral Dewey and General Miles having been adjusted, the more im portant affairs ot stnte may now be attended io.< I f British commanders are to con tinue the practice of being caught in traps set for them by the Boers, the War. in South Africawill become a much more serious affair than it promised to lie at the start. Secretary Gage, it is said, is con templating another call for bonds with a view o f relieving the money strin gency. The, rapacity,., of the ghouls in Wall street is apparently insatiable ami their invalidism is becoming chronicloo. borne persons are apparently dis* •PPpintcd because Hon, Ohaiwcey M, Depew hasn't told the Senate any “ funny” stories. They should give the Hon. Ghauncey time enough to get familiar with his new surround ing*. . v • The action of theGeorgia legislature in refusing, almost unanimously, to resort to measures like those of other southern states, in order to get rid of the negro vote, argues well for the good sense and honesty of its mem- bet*. Thcfe is a disposition in some quarters to divide the trusts into “good” and! “ bad,” but self-interest seems to be the main factor in making the division. It's the old story what, helps me 13 good, what helps the other fellow is bad ^ I f there is any enthusiasm eu either side in these financial speeches in the House, it isn't visible to the naked eye. Neither cuthusmsm mr any. Home of the French newspaper* are inserting that with 100,000 soldiers of ■ Koghiud in Bouth Africa 25 Out) men could capture London. The papers, howeger, fail to state how the 25,000 are to cross the channel. Doubtless, the greatest naval power in the world would have something to say about that. Those chaser* of the Octopus, who delight in making Mr., Hanna the scapegoat for all disasters, will proba bly mot be tip inhuman as to accuse him of repohsibility for the probable collision of the solar system and the milky way which is said to l»e im pending some time during the next .million years. Our broadening relations because of the new possessions will more than ever' make it necessary that trained diplomats he in control of our .affairs at home and abroad. Ami right here it may be -said will be afforded a future brilliant career for many an aspiring youth, In time, the diplo- mntio mid consular service ot the United States ,will be as eagerly sought as are places in the Army and Navy, LAST WEEK’S ISSUE. The Hevnld has but few times in its j history nod especially u der the pre sent maiiageiueiit, every cast any re flection upon any of its former' issues.' But the one of last week could laird ly to passed by without some comment. I t hiis 'been but four weeks since we erected n new cylinder press in our office, in order that we might more complete our facilities than it bad been j in the past, and in this we are placed on a level'with any office in tills county. In speaking of our last.iasue we would say that the differedt feat ures were up to the average, and the advertising eclipsed any issue iu the history of thisjmper, let alone any of ] its competitors iu Greene county. S?ix H undred inches of advertising adorned the columns ot this valuable medium, which certainly speuks for itself. The Herald of last Week had. over O ne H undred inches more of advertising than any weekly or semi- weekly that is published in Greene county, and yet we have it poured in |,qn all sides, that its advertising quali ties are far below that of the so-called county papers. To the advertisers who have found their way to this journal, by which they may inform the people of the goods and wares they have do dispose of, wc would say that you could in no way place an ad in ti'more profitable paper in Greene couuly than- iu the Old ReliableCe- darvjlle Herald, which completes the fifty-second number of her twenty- secondyear with this issue.. The phenomenal run of advertising taxed the Herald’s composing room to its utmost capacity, having extra help and working over time.. The job department was also exceedingly rushed, but when Saturday night drew near, it had been finished, much to the joy of the management, foreman and compositors. 0 As this number finishes the twenty* second-year of the Herald’s career, wo enter the twenty-third with our next, wishing, advertisers and its hundreds of readers a Merry- Christmas and a Happy New Year. Now h the time'to get your pho tograph, f»r Christmas will soon be here.
