There arc a number of things that m u st be taken into consideration about Mr. Alexander’s defeat and we have taken the trouble to look up a few reports that have boon in circulation since tho board was elec ted last fall. * As is known Mr. Alexander was a $ member of the Committee of One Hundred that was responsible, as a member of the Executive Committee for the arrest and conviction Charles Ridgwray, Thomas Mitchell ' and a few others for the violation .of tinyBeal law. Since that time every effort has been made by the whiskey politicians to relieve Mr. Alexander of b is duties. These men have open ly declared that the “nigger’* must go and only last fall did one of the Andrew-Ridgway-Jackson “gang state in our presence. ■ • I t h a sbeen ’known since the mem bers of the board took their seats that Mr. Alexander hadlittle chance of being returned as the majority of the members are to closely associat with the Andrew-Ridgway-Jackson “ gang.” This was .proven when Jackson was chosen secretary of tho board. While we arc credited with pub. Ushing false accusations against the board in regard to the eliminating of .the n\usical supervisor yet neither the Record or the board lias even attempted to offer evidence that w liat we said was untrue/ . I t Was declared by Mr. Alexander’s " friends that the reduction of the sal­ ary from $C0 to $55 was only a fore­ runner of what was to happen a t the election of teachers. Then another person was requested to apply for tho place on the grounds that there was to he a change. In the list o: teachers we do not find his name and its is probable of course_thftt were are responsible for him nofcget- ting tiie same position. To show that Mr. Alexander cannot attribute all of h is befeat to the Herald lie never pub In his application until a short time before tho meeting last Wednesday evening. A member of tile board before going into the meet­ ing stated to a friend that one of tho best teachers in the school was not an applicant and it was regretted very much, but this member did not knov that Mr. Alexander lmd trust­ ed his application with another member and not with the. clerk. There has been no report of- the .meeting as to this member making an eloquent speech favoring the teacher he regretted was not an ap pltcant. Yes, the Record can blame us any time for the board turning down Mr. Alexander because it didn’t like *what we had to say on the doing away of the musical course^ and the redaction of the salary, Tho reflec­ tion is on the board and we say that any member of the hoard that would sacrifice the interests of the schools by refusing to elect a man whose work for nearly twenty years has been of the greatest satisfaction, thinking that they could whip us through him is anything h a t a gen­ tlemen and a man to narrow minded to he a member of a Board of Edu­ cation* Yen* blame uo.
