Every great nation1 or the world lms sent its representatives to hon or this “Gardener of Santa Boat1’ He has been offered more than has been given to any other excepfcHen- ry M. Stanley, toga upon the lyoe- um platform, but ho absolutely re fuses. To his Intimate and sympathetic personal friend, H. A. Adrian, he has entrusted his data together with lantern elides and specimen plants for public presentation on the lec ture platform.1 Through all the world’ s long, long history, new forms ol plant life were produced only by the slow process of evolution; Burbank has shown the way to bridge over the centuries and produce new forms of plant life in only a score ot years. Briers and thorns were once use ful protection to the plants that bore them; now they arc no longer needed andmust be made to go thS way of the bow and arrow, and the iron armour of chivalry. Bnrbank has bred away every thorn from the blackberry and every spine .from the cactus. Soon the rose anti the raspberry must yield their thorns and. grow ns smooth as a willow. • ' The Stone of the peach and the pit of the cherry were once necessary to guard the seed and preserve the germ of new life, but now they are no longer needed. Burbank has made tho plum give up its pit,-— come and see tor j ourself! Sooil the apple will have no Beed, tire peach no stone,' the cherry, no pit,— the strawberry and the fig will be solid meat all the way through. Who ever thought of raising trees for a.regular farm crop? Think of a big saw-log grovbi from the seed in fifteen years!. .Burbank is doing it, Come and examine' the wood from these logs, and learn how to grow your own lumber. “ A wonderful afcory, wonderfully well told.’’—Senator J.
