FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1921 REEFING MONEY AT HOME Press dispatches several days ago brought news o f the financial condi tion o f a company that has taken many thousand. dollars from this county that today would be of use not only to the owner o f the money, hut i f deposited in some o f our ex cellent financial institutions, would no doubt he loaned during the. money shortage to those who would make good use o f it. Ordinary the press has little right to advise how money fjliould or should not ho invested but we believe that when so plain a case as has come to light again against this company, we have a* perfect right, and the public will look upon it as a duty, to speak in plain terms. The Boston wlzzard, Ponze, that fleeced hundreds o f people out o f thousands o f dollars proved to be a crook. For the press to remain silent would have been betraying a a trust the press ‘inherits aS a de fender of those who are apt to be mislead in making investments. Some days ago we read a report o f the State Department o f Com merce which says that $275,400 has' been lost 'by the people o f Greene county in .the last three years in worthless stocks. In other words this gigantic fortune was filched from the people o f this county through the promises of laTgc returns by the way of high interest’ rates. The $275,400 lost by Greene county people has gone down the sewer of economic waste right under our noses;-In this abnormal time it would make quite a difference if this money were in safe institutions. In government securities, school, county or city, bonds. But this report touched move than the loss o f a few thousand dollars. It brought forward the fact that women, more especially widows, are the natural prey fo r fake stock salesmen. Life insurance companies have the records to prove that the average “ widow” within seven years after she collects her husband's life insurance is—broke. , So far as the company now in the hands o f 'a receiver is concerned it is the second time within recent years that its condition has been air ed before the public. Back in 1915 the state department held that the company was doing a loose business and that the investors <noney was not backed with assets o f sufficient value tp make' it safe, it Was also charged that money received fo r the sale o f stock Was used to pay divi dends. that w ire not earned. The com pany. took their case to the highest courts but lost out. The officers then promised to be good if permitted to do business in the state, again. Now the public hears that this con cern has obligations about due that amount to nearly a million dollars in the form o f promissory notes. The receivership was brought to stay off collection o f these notes. A t that time the Herald had some thing to say about how the money o f innocent mep and wpmen had been secured by false statements as to the safety of such investments. It will be recalled that the Editor was threatened by a representative o f this company in this county. ■» Even our hankers in the county were the victims o f this man’s caustic criti cism because they refused to endorse such investments as safe, Most men are capable, or should be, o f deciding fo r themselves as to the safety o f the investment they have under consideration. ,It is Hie money so taken, from unsuspecting women, who rely more on the ’ so- called honor and integrity o f the salesman than the mere value of the proposition he has fo r sale. The cunning lie, the attack o f the agent on -the men heading banks and build ing associations that these men are “knockers” , jealous from the fact that they cannot pay as high rate o f interest, has drawn many a dollar from the woman or inexperienced business man that has since been list ed in the $275,400 which the state report refers to above. The Hofaid was fully convinced at that time that we were in the right, regardless o f the attacks from am bush by the company’s representa tive. Today wo have no desire to lay any'claim to the “ I told you” story. To those seeking investment first find out whether you are being sold stock for speculation o t investment. I f the later consult your banker. Do not buy something the bank cannot take as security if you desire to. bor row money on it at any time. Greene county has some splendid financial institutions. The men that head these institutions are known to us all and their ropon iib ifify, Has never been questioned. Your money in these institution* will first bring. you 160 r-er rent dividends on sa fe ty ' ar/3 peace o f mind. There is no com parison between tbi* and the seven or eight per cent and your money hack when you want it story from the oily tongupd blue sky salesman who first has in mind hi* commis sion and not the future security o f your money. Remember he is rep-J resenting a crew o f stock gamblers 1 that have neither conscience or | mercy as to how, from whom or where they get thair money, I f you want inveatments see your banker or advise with some friend that is in position to "be posted on financial matters. I f you want to speculate or gamble in the stock market do business through a relia ble brokerage house. What ever you do, lay away from the hold-up man that peddles the 100 per cent invest ment and seven or eight per cent dividend proposition from door to door. If you wan t'indu slm l . stock investments they can bd found in this county—-in concerns that are un der the management o f men we all know to be safe and reliable. What Kind of Plpee?
