FRIDAY, JANUARY 20, 1923. A GREAT WRONG DONE . Evidently a great wrong has been done Leroy McKinney, who was found guilty o f shooting Policeman McKnight and given a life sentence in the penitentiary, being sent up from Clinton county, i f it is proven that Louis Vandcr*. oort is. the guilty person and not McKinney. It is said that the evidence was all furnished by a detective agency and this leads' us to conclude that to allow this case to go unsettled could mean than almost any person could be accused o f a crime and ®ent over for life. We know nothing o f the character o f McKinney or his habits It makes little difference just now. If he was wrongfully convicted he should not only have hir. liberty but should b e recompenced b y . Cli ton ounty and it should be no mean sum. A t this time everything seems to be in McKinney’s favor for liberty. We are told that the evidence against him was very flimsy but the people in Clinton county were so incensed and worked up over the murder o f the officer, that someone had to. pay the bill. ■ y> If McKinney was guilty o f the act he should remain where he is, but if he is innocent ho should be liberated. ONE LEAK COULD BE STOPPED. There is a great demand for a re duction in taxes and that the cost of administration o f public affairs should be reduced. We hear of the high cost o f roads; unnecessary ex pense in conducting our educational institutions; public salaries are fa r more than they should he and a scoi'e >£ other places where the. taxpayer thinks thei'e is a leak. But there is one place where our state and national government is spending great sums of money and not getting financial return that could be under a different plan. Millions.of dollars are being spent in enforcing the prohibition law. Some fines art- assessed. Of this we all agree. .But the leak comes in the program where dry detectives get a large per cent of che fee. Mr, Taxpayer is called upon to pay the bill o f costly trials, court costs and fees, hut the detective who works on the per cent-plan takes the cream c>f -the’ fine. The states and the government is not collecting enough to meet this expense. The detective has no expense .His share o f "the fine is all profit. The taxpayer has no pro tection under such a system. He had none during the war when public work was done on the cost plus plan. He can hope fo r little relief under the system, we have today. Mirror in Man's Hat. A man can manage somehow to get along without a powder rag. but there are Occasions when lie does need a mirror and a comb tor emergency use. To meet this de mand, Gustav Peszornack, of Tren- tpn, N, J„ has contrived a holder for both articles which way be conveni ently fastened inside o f a hat. It is sewn in, being made o f cloth, a rec tangular piece of which Is attached to the inside of the liat by snap fast eners at the corners. This makes the • bnck of the holder; the front is pro vided by a. second piece, of like size, secured to the first one by stitching. The two thus form a pocket; A hori zontal line of stitching divides the pocket Into two compartments, an upper one to receive the mirror and a lower one to hold the comb. One end of the pocket is .left open to per mit Insertion Of comb ’and glass.
