Seed-Corn Maggot Is First On Deck Leads Advance Guard Of Pests Which Attack Com In Spring CHURCH NOTES .Sabbath School 10 A, M, Supt. O. A> Dobbins. : ■ ______ 11 A, M. Children's Day exercises, As the advance guard o f insect f.1 th v^ ,ldrcss ^ UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH pests o f new corn, the seed-com mag got is the first to neutralise legislative farm relief by destroying the crop in the very teeth of senators and rep resentatives. « "The seed-com maggot -is a small, footless maggot found inside the seed- coat o f the swollen and germinating kernel," says T. H. Parks, extension specialist in entomology with the Ohio State University. "It resembles the house-fly maggot in some respects, and cabbage growers would say,at first glance that it is the cabbage piagot. However, it limits its work to kernels of corn, peas, beans, and sometimes sprouting potatoes. "These maggots develop from eggs laid on the soil surface by a fly, and the little larvae work heir way to the kernels, which they enter and through which they tunnel. In a few days they have so badly damaged the seed as to stop all growth and produce decay be fore the plant even appears above the ground surface. “ This damage always occurs in May. It is known to be augmented by cold, backward spring weather, and is most severe when excessive organic matter or manure is in the soil. “ If the damage is severe enough to compel the farmer, to plant the crop over, it is seldom repeated, because the maggots have by that lime changed to the resting stage ami the adult flies which eohie out later, are too late to find suitable kernels for the maggots to infest. “No remedy is available, Planting over is th' farmers only recourse Mrs, J. Although future supplies of both sheep and lambs appear to be lai'gor at present than they have been for several years, sheep men should avoid too hesVy liquidation of their flocks, ,in .the opinion of C. R. Arnold o f the ‘ rural' economies department o f the Ohio State University. “A slump, in sheep prices is usually o f short dura tion," Arnold says, Arnold explains the recent break in .lamb prices, by the large increase in ‘ supplies. Receipts .of lambs at seven j I leading markets during April were 23! Iper cent larger than in April of Iastj } year. Inspected slaughter of lambs 'last month was the highest for any •April in the past 15 years and the 'second largest on record, 1 Heavy late movement of lambs .from Colorado and western Nebraska and of fed, shorn, lambs from com mercial feed lots, together with heavy 'and unexpected shipments o f spring lambs from California caused the heavy increase, Arnold reports. Market supplies of sheep and lambs during May And June are expected to be larger than during the same months last year, due to the larger early spring lamb crop and prospec tive early movement from the south eastern early lamb area, including Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia.
