MOTHER 'S D A Y A NAT IONAL D A Y Now.that Mother’ s Day is but a pace away we find a nation o f people in an age o f commercialism ready to turn their atten tion and thoughts toward— Mother As g*eat as the sentiment o f the people is in observance o f the day honoring the mothers o f the nation, w e find commercialism playing a-part, be it right or wrong. The g ift to a mother from an absent son or daughter is but a token o f remenbrancq but how much greater a g ift if tne fam ily in every home could gather on that day in the pres ence o f— Mother, There can be no Question that Mother’s Day brings back many pleasant remembrances o f days past and the spirit is again renewed to honor Mother once again. Whether Mother’s Day should be commercialized is a de batable question. Mrs. Franklin Roosevelt heads a group who have set put to decommerciaizd Mother's Day. It is planned to campaign f o r the aid o f charity supported by the Golden Rule Foundation and have sums now spent on Mother’s Day gifts go fo r this purpose. It is a noble movement to have one day o f the year in paying reveYance to Mother—-bu t after all each day in the year should be Mother's Day. William Mitchell, head o f our flying forces in the war, tells you that the United States shows signs o f striking out on its own account in aviation. He writes, after a visit to Akron: “ I have looked over the airship be ing built for the Navy department at ^kron. This ship is the greatest at tempt o f a man to conquer the air. It will be able to cross the Atlantic four times without refueling. At reduced speed, it will bp able to circle the globq, at the latitude o f New York, “ In its front part there it a hangar which will accomodate from four to seven airplanes, which can take o ff or Jtand on the ship at will, and all o f its ‘works’ are inside it. “ Compare a ship o f this size, cost ing five and a half million dollars,; with a surface airplane carrier that costs from fifty to eighty millions. The airship alone or with its air planes, can destroy a whole' fleet o f sea vessels, and a group o f them can defend themselves very well against air attach,.with the assistance o f their own airplanes, their power o f conceal ment and their maneuverability." The French government, to promote its. pari-mutuel system o f race track betting, arranges to take bets not only at the race course, but anywhere in France. Bets can be sent by telegraph or mail. You deposit money in ad vance, not less than 5,000 francs ($ 200 ) ; and the smallest bet by wire or mail is 50 .francs ($2.00) All profit gops to the government except purses actually won.- by .the owners o f racing horses. In this country we bet on the races at least $10 for every one bet in France, and all the profit goes to book makers, race track touts, etc. Business men plan a fight'to cljange in a common-sense why, some" o f the laws that hamper business, and it is none too soon. Under the obsolete Sherman act, made in the days o f han som cabs, nearly half a century agOj any group o f men that should now “ conspire” to stop criminal waste ip the oil industry, or to regulate any in dustrial production to prevent slumps or depression, could be put in jail. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., serves bis. city by*building and transforming an undeveloped section in the heart o f New York at an expense o f about $250,000,000. This undertaking guam- tees, over A long period, a very large and permanent income fo r Columbia college. It shows what can. be done, with imagination, energy and money, to improve a great city in a short time. Most important, Mr. Rockefel ler’s enterprise w ill give employment to thousands o f men now out o f work, in the highly paid building trades. Mary Pickfard, in New York on her way to London, says her will will com pel the burning o f all films o f moving pictures in which’ she has appeared, Mary iB still very young; her will, probably, will not be read for 60 or 70 years at the earliest, and everybody hopes it will be much nearer 100 years Perhaps, in that interval, she will realize that to destroy pictures, which are a most important, part ,o f a great American industry, and illustrate forward step in civilization, would be a crime. She made her pictures, shs says, to give happiness in her life time. She should leave them . to give inspiration and information. . It it a re minder that everyone should be at some form o f productive work. ThiB ( not only includes work o f the house-; wife but in the fielf, garden and about I the lawn. Nature has had its re st, during the winter months and bloom- 11 ingj trees are again ready for duty to provide what ever mother nature set apart for them. Some time ago we read an interest ing story about clover and bumble bees. At times no doubt one wonders how plants from one continent get to another. Tobacco is a native Amer ican plant yet is known around the world. Coffee originated in Asia; rub ber in^ Brazil and s 6 on with -many others that could be listed. But the feature o f the story was how this gov ernment succeeded in growing Ameri can red clover in the Philippines. It was there the humble bumble bee had: a part which proved to science the unwelcome post, as we often term it, had a part in nature’s program. The government shipped tons o f clover seed to the island and had it planted. It grew readily in that rich soil and gave every promise of continuous growth. But the next year the. clover disappeared. Here is where the experts were puz zled. Many contended ‘’the experiment was a failure but one would not give up. He had a thought that with the clover fields in the' States there was always bumble bees. Investigation revealed there were no. bumble bees in the Philippines, no insects with tongues long enough to reach into the floret o f the clover and carry o ff the pollen. Uncle Sam knew where to get bumble bees and a cargo was sent a- ^ross the Pacific, Clover was planted again. Both bees and clover flourish ed. Today the native Vhrginian bum ble bee is as much at home in the Or iental islands as in his native ' tote. Pro- FIRST PRESBYTERIAN Sabbath School 10 A, M. Preaching Service 11 A .
