Tho lesson today has Its peculiar significance in the light of Ntcodemus* station In Iffq, He was « learned rab bi, * doctor of the law, and presuma bly a man of good character. His coming by night indicates his timidity, JUk* Jqsigph of Arlmatfiea, he was afraid to espouse openly the cause of the new teacher of Galilee. 'Though timid, as ati honest man, be invest!- (rated and obtained first-hand infor mation. Because of this Information, he uttered the brave words in the Ranhedrlu against-dodging-A-man-be— fore hearing him (John,’ 7 :45-52) and rendered loving service at the Lord's tomb (John 19 :S8-42). M- Jesus’ Discourse to Nleodemue on the New Birth (w. 3-1,7), L The necessity of,.the new birth (vv. 3-7). If one is ever to see or en ter the kingdom of God, he must be bom again. There can be no person- *1 choice in the matter. Regenera tion Is the first dethand the gospel of Christ makes upon man. The rea- sonsfor this are: .' *• a; The Kingdom of God Is a splrlt- ualr kingdom, therefore there must be a Spiritual birth In order to enter It <v; S). AS w* enter the 'physical kingdom by a natural birth, so we .en ter the kingdom of God by a super natural birth. b. The. nature wh(cb Is ours through th* natural birth is radically and es sentially bfd (v. 6, cf. Gal. 5:19-21). That which*IS bom of thefiesh is flesh. In the Galatian text Paul gives a cata logued! (he works of the flesh. The flesh cannog be Improved (Jer. 13:23). In order Center into (he kiugdon of heaven there must be a nature fitted for heaven. There Is nothing that can he substituted for the new birth. Men today are trying to substitute morality and education for the new birth. Nlc- .odeums possessed these, yet Christ declared that he needed more. 2, The mystery of the new birth (vr. 8-13). Though the new birth Is mysterious, Its results are definite. This mystery is illustrated by the wind* We oannot discern from whence it cometh or wither it goeth, but we know by it* effect* that it blows- The fruit of the life demonstrate* its na ture, whether It is heavenly or carnal, We need not to be told that we have bad a physical birth for our bodies with their various faculties In exercise prove It. Even so,.the presence with in us of a nature which has no affinity for the things of. the yporld, a strong affection for God and a disposition to yield prompt obedience to hts com mands proves' our birth from above, Just as ghe tree Is known by Its fruit, so tastes, .desires, and ambitions prove the quality of our nature. 8. The ground upon which the new birth rests (vv. 14,15). Christ’s aton ing, death on the tross makes regener ation possible. He took the place of sinners. His infinite merit was placed to their account. He suffered In the Binder's stead. Just as the Israelites had only to look upon the brazen ser pent In the wilderness, so the sinner needs only^to look upon Christ up-' lifted on the cross (Num. 21:4-9; John 12:32; II Cor. 5:21; I Pet 2:24). Our salvation cost on the part of God the giving up of his only begotten Son,. and on the part of Christ the suffering' and sham* of the ctobs . 4. For whom the new birth was pro vided (vv. 16, 17). “Whosoever be lleveth in him.” These verses give In a condensed form the whole plan of salvation. Observe; *. Its source—“God so loved.’* b. Its -ground—the death of Christ— “He gave.” c. Its recipients—“Whosoever.” d. Its condition—“Belleveth in him.” • „ e. Its results—“Should not perish—’ have evarlastlng life.” III. Man's Attitude Toward Christ • (vv, 18-21). 1, Some believe and are saved. Those who believe are now free from ( condemnation. j 2. Soma will not believe and are ■ therefore resting under the condem - •. nation of God, The awful sin which dkutes man to be eternally.lost Is un- ' belief in Christ. The cause of thelt unbelief In him is their love of sin. Work and Worry It is not work that kills men ; it is Worry. Work is healthy: you can hardly put more upon a man thau he can hear. Worry is rust upon the blade, it Is not the revolution that destroys the machinery, but the Me- tlom—Henry Ward Beecher. ' .1 Oversow* Difficulties "The soul that the Holy Spirit i s ' guiding Will bs taught to expect dim-. Culties, end to patiently plod on and' overcome them.” - The greatly increased scope o f the picture dram* over that of the stage; and the arduous requirements o f an actor who plays the central or starr ing role, is clearly shown in Para mount’s filmization of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic, “ Dr, Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” , which- is the feature pic ture at the Regent Theatre, Spring- field for four days starting Saturday, January 16th. Fredric March, who plays the dual personality role, appears in 218 ef the 305 scenes in. the picture. Of these, 110 are as Jekyll and 108 as Hyde. Although he delivers 216 speeches at Jekyll to 81 as Hyde,' the latter was far more difficult in. pro portion since he had to speak them in j disguised voice.
