M 'J When Gas lighting Interfered with the Divine Plan of the Wnrld • Back in 1822 a. few scattered American cities already used gas fo r street lighting . . . but when the attempt was made to introduce gas light into New England there arose a wave o f widespread preju dice to stand in, its way. T h e B o ston Da ily Advertiser summed up the objections o f the day in an editorial in which it cited these fou r arguments against the use o f gas: ( 1 ) Artificial illumination is an attempt to interfere with the Divine Plan o f the world which lias pre o rd a in ed that it s liou ld b e dark during the night time. ( 2 ) Lighted streets will incline peop le to remain late out o f doors, thus leading to an in crea se'of ailments, by colds. ( 3 ) The fear o f darkness will vanish ’ and drunkenness and depravity will increase. ( 4 ) Horses will be fright ened and thieves emboldened. Despite these and other fancifu l arguments, however, gas light made its way* because it represented a fundamental contribution to serv ice, com fort, and human efficiency. T h e great development o f the gas industry in the laBt one hundred years has been due to its constant ; devotion to the same ideals. Today, the gas industry, has won itself the fields o f home heatings water heat in g and cook ing because, by provid* ing com fortable, certain, automatic, and dependable heat, it has contrib uted another m a jor convenience to make modern living m ore complete.
