Daily papers the first of the New Year reported that Wilford S. Alex­ ander, federal alcohol administrator, urged Congrees today to ban adver­ tising of liquor on ;the radio. In his annual report of the year ended December 15, Alexander also proposed that Congress forbid pub­ lication of liquor advertising, in Sun­ day editions of newspapers, of adver­ tisements portraying, children qr re­ ferring to alcoholic beverages as hav­ ing tonis, food or medicinal quali­ ties. Temperance advocates will say “Amen” to all of this. Judge Arthur H. James, Pensyl- vania’s newly-elected governor, is quoted as saying: "Do you think the liquor situation needs improvement? H you don’t, I do. I stand for dealing straight from the shoulder with the liquor question.” The Dry League Herald referring to this statement says: “It is a world of comfort to know that Pennsylvania is to have for our next four years, a Christian gentle­ man who is respected and admired by all who know him for what he really is.” Senator Morris Sheppard in his an­ nual address before the U. S_ Sen­ ate on the adoption of Prohibition January 16, said: Under national prohibition one could travel from the Atlantic to the Pac- iftce and from the Canadian to the Mexican border without seeing a bill or a neon light advertising somebody’s liquor establishment of ■ a particular brand of alcohlic drink. During the 13 years of national prohibition not one of the millions pf copies of magazines and spapers which came into the American home contained a liquor advertisement. Not once dur­ ing that 13 years was the voice of the radio announcer heard in the privacy of an American fireside proclaiming the alleged merit of some liquor dis­ pensary.
