Messenger, chairman o f the Xenia city-township board No. 1, said his figures show 3,461 registrants -of which 1,564 were inducted. This boosted to 3,304 the number o f men drafted by hath hoards since their organiza­ tion Oct. 14, 1940. County hoard Xo>.3 disclosed 1,751 had been in­ ducted from its rolls. Friday’s legislative action in. Parks, exten­ sion entomologist o f Ohio State University discuss whafcs new in the battle on plant diseases and insect pests at the Court House Assembly Room Thursday even­ ing April 10 at 8:00 o’clock. Mr. Parks, who is author of many publications on plant pests and is in charge o f the Ohio Spray Service will discuss new materials and new methods o f plant pest control. Practically all the dis­ eases o f plants have become more destructive. The list o f insecti­ cides and o f fungicides has lengthened. Chemists are already hunting fo r more effective weap­ ons that DDT, which g o t more public attention than any other insecticide ever developed. BEEKEEPERS TO CONVENE Beekeepers o f Greene County will hold their annual meeting Tuesday evening April 15 at 8:00 o’clock at the Court House As­ sembly Room. Chas. BEEKEEPERS ORDER BEES BY THE BILLION Southern producers o f package bees are planning to ship more than 1,330,000 pounds o f bees to northern apiaries this spring, A 1-pound package o f bees contains about 3,500 o f the honey gather­ ers, which are used to start new colonies or to strengthen colonies which have had heavy winter losses. Honey production now is listed as being a much less important activity o f bees than their work as pollenizers. Pollen distribution in fruit orchards and in clover and alfalfa where seed is to be produced is necessary to produce good yields. The employer will be required to house and feed the men and pay them pre­ vailing wage rates. Farmers are asked to estimate their labor requirements now and if they wish out of state help to request the kind of workers de­ sired, the number, and the date needed. WATER TABLE DROPS Spring rains are n e e d e d to build up reserves o f soil moisture for the crop season ahead. The water table receding all over Ohio according to the monthly report of the state Water Resources board. Readings in Greene County show a drop of four and one-half feet in the water leve l. during the month o f February, PROTECT GRAIN FROM * WEEVILS As grain bins are emptied they should be given an application of DDT to .prevent damage by grain weevil to 1947 grain crops, This treatment is cheap and is most effective if done at least three weeks before new grain is stored. Farmers are advised to use 5 per cent DDT oil emulsion, which is sold in a concentrated form and is diluted with four times its volume of water. The walls and floors or the bins and the outside sills and lower walls of _the gran­ ary should be sprayed with the solution. ; Weevil infestations in stored" grains are caused by b e e t l e s which hide in granaries from one harvest to the next. They live on stray kernels or particles o f grain ,left in empty bins, Bins should be swept clean before the DDT is applied to kill the weevils. GOOD PROFIT IN SAVING PIGS Prices for hogs now make the saving of spring pigs more than ordinarily important. Anemia, often called t h u m p s , usually shows up when the pigs are less than two weeks old but may occur many times. One treatment is to place a square foot o f clean sod daily in the pen with the sow and pigs. The sod furnishes the small amounts of i r o n and copper needed. Another way to supply the iron and copper is t<§ paint the sows’ udders daily with some solution which contains the two minerals. A common solution usecLby -for­ mers is made by mixhig three parts ground copper sulphate, 27 parts iron sulphate, and 70 parts dextrine; and a pound o f this mixture is dissolved in one pint ' of water. Roundworms, which are one o f the worst hog parasites, can he controlled by treatment w i t h sodium fluoride. One pound o f pure sodium fluoride should he mixed throughly with 99 pounds of dry feed, and the hogs are fed their ordinary daily grain ration. Sodium fluoride should not be given to hogs in slop because it may have toxic effects. Hogs will get their share of the remedy best if the animals are divided into small lots.
